Bupleurum chinense & Pueraria lobata

 

 

bitter, acrid, slightly cold
relieves the Exterior, removes Heat, soothes 
the Liver, relieves depression, raises yáng
sweet, acrid, neutral
relieves the Exterior, promotes skin eruption, 
generates Fluid, raises yáng, stops diarrhoea

 

Indications
o  Fever due to external affection.

Combined action
Expels Evils from the Muscle, clears Heat.

Combinations
o  For fever caused by exterior contracted Wind-Cold, can be added to Jiu Wei Qiang Huo Tang.
o  For fever caused by exterior contracted Wind-Heat, can be added to Sang Ju Yin or Yin Qiao San

Dosage
The typical proportion when added to a constitutional formula is 6:1 formula to addition (15 grams in 75-90 grams of formula). If a stronger effect is desired more can be added. When used alone the dose is three grams twice daily.

Cautions and contraindications
Caution in patients with hyperactivity of Fire due to yin deficiency and hyperactivity of Liver-yang while prescribing Chai Hu.
