Major therapeutic action
Clears heat, cools the blood and eliminates deep illnesses.

Dosage
The typical proportion when added to a constitutional formula is 6:1 formula to addition (15 grams in 75- 90 grams of formula). If a stronger effect is desired more can be added. When used alone the dose is three grams twice daily.

Indications
*  For dredging out deeply hidden pathogens that linger in the deep levels of the body.
*  afternoon, tidal or unrelenting fever, flushing, night sweats from fluid deficiency.

Cautions and contraindications
Caution in patients with digestive complaints.
Contraindicated in postpartum women with mild or subclinical anaemia.

Combinations
*  With Xiao Chai Hu Tang for post viral syndrome. This combination is also used for malaria.
*  With Er Xian Tang for severe feeling of heat especially in the afternoon or in the palms or soles combined with malar flush, night sweats, dry tongue with cracks and no coat.
