Major therapeutic action
Purgative, clears heat, opens the bowels and invigorates blood.

Dosage
The dose of Da Huang required tends to vary considerably from patient to patient. In general it is best to start with a small dose (1-2 grams per day) and work up until a smooth bowel movement is achieved. In acute cases with severe constipation associated with fever, a larger dose (5 grams) may be used initially to powerfully purge the bowel.

Indications
*  an important herb for a variety of patterns associated with constipation and fixed stabbing pain.

Combinations
*  With Run Chang Wan for constipation from dryness or fluid deficiency. The rhubarb should be gradually withdrawn once the treatment takes effect.
*  With Huang Lian Jie Du Tang for heat in the stomach with constipation.
*  With Xiao Chai Hu Tang for gallstones and chronic cholecystitis.

Cautions and contraindications
Not suitable for long-term use in patients with deficiency types of constipation. Habituation may occur.
Caution in patients with digestive problems.
Contraindicated during pregnancy, in nursing mothers and when there is an acute cold or flu.
