Gan Cao

sweet, warm tonifies the body and strengthens energy, eases spasms
Bai Shao bitter, sour, cool nourishes Blood and fluids, softens the Liver, stops spasms and pain


Major therapeutic action
antispasmodic, moderates pain due to smooth and skeletal muscle spasm.

Dosage
The typical proportion when added to a constitutional formula is 6:1 formula to addition (15 grams in 75- 90 grams of formula). If a stronger effect is desired more can be added. When used alone the dose is three grams twice daily.

Indications
*  all pain patterns due to muscle spasms or cramps. Commonly used for abdominal pain due to digestive complaints combined with emotional components such as irritability or depression and the cramping abdominal pain of irritable bowel syndrome. Pain of gastric ulcers.
*  Calf cramps, leg cramps.
*  Polycystic ovarian disease.

Cautions and contraindications
Can aggravate fluid accumulation in some patients.
None noted.

Combinations
*  Can be added to any formula as an assistant pair where muscle spasm and pain is a feature.
