Gan Jiang

acrid, hot warms the digestion, expels cold, transforms thin Phlegm

Rou Gui

acrid, sweet warms the body, warms the uterus and stops pain


Major therapeutic action
Warms, disperses internal Cold.


Dosage
The typical proportion when added to a constitutional formula is 6:1 formula to addition (15 grams in 75- 90 grams of formula). If a stronger effect is desired more can be added. When used alone the dose is three grams twice daily.

Indications
*  For warming the digestive and reproductive systems, stimulating heat in the body. Warms the uterus for symptoms of pain with a cold sensation over the uterus where heat is palliative, and possibly menstrual pain.
*  Transforms and resolves thin phlegm and fluids in the lungs.

Cautions and contraindications
None noted.
Contraindicated in hot or dry conditions with afternoon or low grade fever, malar flush, or a feeling of heat in the palms and soles.

Combinations
*  Add to Si Jun Zi Tang for patterns of cold with digestive weakness, chronic diarrhoea with undigested food, nausea and vomiting, anorexia, or chronic mouth ulcers. (similar t*  Li Zhong Wan).
*  Add to Zhi Sou San for chronic productive cough.
*  With Liu Wèi Di Huang Wan and Xian Ling Pi & Xian Mao to warm and strengthen the body. Add Bu Gu Zhi & Yi Zhi Ren for nocturia, frequency and enuresis.
