Gua Lou

bitter, cold moves qi, relieves distension and fullness, transforms Phlegm,
 relieves chest pain, clears the Lung, relieves cough

Xie Bai

acrid, bitter, warm disperses Cold, activates yang, warms the Centre, resolves stagnation


Major therapeutic action
Activates yang, moves qi, expels Phlegm.

Dosage
The typical proportion when added to a constitutional formula is 6:1 formula to addition (15 grams in 75- 90 grams of formula). If a stronger effect is desired more can be added. When used alone the dose is three grams twice daily.

Indications
o Chest bi: dull pain in the chest, or chest pain spreading to the back, dyspnea, cough, shortness of breath; which are commonly seen in angina pectoris, chronic bronchitis, intercostal neuralgia.

Combinations
* With Blood stasis, add Ru Xiang/Mo Yao or Pu Huang/Wu Ling Zhi.
* For Chest bi with symptoms due to Blood stasis, combine with Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang.
