Achyranthes bidentata & Leonurus heterophyllus

 

 

Chuan Niu Xi

bitter, sour, neutral removes Blood stagnation, opens the meridians, treats injury,
tonifies the Liver and Kidney, strengthens the Tendon and Bone, directs Blood downwards, induces diuresis, treats stranguria

Yi Mu Cao

acrid, slightly
 bitter, slightly cold
activates Blood, regulates menstruation, induces diuresis,
removes swelling, cools Blood, treats skin eruption


Major therapeutic action
Activates Blood, removes Blood stasis, regulates menstruation.

Dosage
The typical proportion when added to a constitutional formula is 6:1 formula to addition (15 grams in 75- 90 grams of formula). If a stronger effect is desired more can be added. When used alone the dose is three grams twice daily.

Indications
*  Amenorrhoea, dysmenorrhoea, postpartum bleeding.
*  Abdominal pain due to Blood stasis.
*  Pain due to injuries.

Cautions and contraindications
None noted.
Niu Xi is contraindicated in pregnant women and patients with menorrhagia.

Combinations
*  For irregular menstruation, add Chuan Xiong/Dang Gui.
*  For irregular menstruation due to Liver depression and Blood deficiency, combine with Xiao Yao San.
*  With Blood deficiency, combine with Si Wu Tang.
