Dan Shen

Tan Xiang

acrid, warm moves qi, alleviates pain

San Qi

sweet, slightly

transforms stagnant Blood, stops bleeding, activates Blood, alleviates pain


Major therapeutic action
Moves qi, activates Blood, removes Blood stasis, dredges collaterals, and alleviates pain.

Dosage
The typical proportion when added to a constitutional formula is 6:1 formula to addition (15 grams in 75- 90 grams of formula). If a stronger effect is desired more can be added. When used alone the dose is three grams twice daily.

Indications
*  Pain of chest bi syndrome due to Blood stasis.
*  Stomach-ache due to qi stagnation and Blood stasis.

Combinations
*  For chest bi syndrome, combine with Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang.
*  Can be added to Chuan Xiong/Dang Gui for postpartum abdominal pain.
