Ru Xiang

pungent, bitter and warm promotes Blood circulation, dissolves stagnated Blood, moves qi, alleviates pain, reduces swelling, promotes tissue regeneration

Mo Yao

bitter, neutral promotes Blood circulation, dissolves stagnated Blood, regulates qi, alleviates pain, reduces swelling, promotes tissue regeneration


Major therapeutic action
*  Promotes Blood circulation, dissolves stagnated Blood, moves qi, alleviates pain, reduces swelling and promotes tissue regeneration.

Biomedical action
*  Improves haemorheology, takes on analgesic and bacterial inhibitory effects.

Indications
*  Menstrual problems.
*  Traumatic injuries.
*  Carbuncles and sores.

Dosage
The typical proportion when added to a constitutional formula is 6:1 formula to addition (15 grams in 75- 90 grams of formula). If a stronger effect is desired more can be added. When used alone the dose is three grams twice daily.

Combinations
*  For cardiac pain, combine with Dan Shen/Tan Xiang/Tian Qi.
*  For abdominal pain due to stagnation of qi and blood, combine with Jin Ling Zi San.
*  For dysmenorrhoea, combine with Chuan Xiong/Dang Gui.
*  For arthritis due to Wind and Cold, combine with Hai Tong Pi/Qin Jiao and Du Huo/Qiang Huo.
Cautions and contraindications
Caution in patients with gastrointestinal problems as Ru Xiang may cause nausea and vomiting.
Contraindicated during pregnancy.
Contraindicated in patients with loss of blood.
