Chuan Xiong

bitter, warm activates Blood, removes Blood stagnation, expels Wind, alleviates pain

Dang Gui

sweet, acrid, warm nourishes Blood, activates Blood, removes Blood stagnation, regulates menstruation, moistens the Intestines, relieves constipation


Major therapeutic action
Activates Blood, promotes the circulation of Blood, regulates menstruation, alleviates pain.

Dosage
The typical proportion when added to a constitutional formula is 6:1 formula to addition (15 grams in 75- 90 grams of formula). If a stronger effect is desired more can be added. When used alone the dose is three grams twice daily.

Indications
*  Headache due to Blood deficiency along with Blood stasis.
*  Dysmenorrhoea, postpartum abdominal pain.
*  Pain due to Wind-Damp bi syndrome.

Cautions and contraindications
Caution in patients with hyperactivity of Fire due to yin deficiency and hyperactivity of Liver-yang while prescribing Chuan Xiong.
Chuan Xiong is contraindicated in patients with menorrhagia, or pregnant women.

Combinations
*  For Blood deficiency, add Shu Di/He Shou Wu.
*  For stagnated Blood, add Tao Ren/Hong Hua.
*  For irregular menstruation, add Chuan Niu Xi/Yi Mu Cao.
*  For pain due to Blood stasis, combine with Ru Xiang/Mo Yao or Pu Huang/Wu Ling Zhi.
*  With qi stagnation, combine with Jin Ling Zi San.
