Dan Shen

Mu Dan Pi

acrid, bitter,

clears Heat, cools Blood, activates Blood, disperses Blood stagnation, removes deficiency Heat


Major therapeutic action
Cools Blood, stops bleeding, removes Blood stasis, generates new Blood.

Dosage
The typical proportion when added to a constitutional formula is 6:1 formula to addition (15 grams in 75- 90 grams of formula). If a stronger effect is desired more can be added. When used alone the dose is three grams twice daily.

Indications
o  Heat in the Blood with yin deficiency, continuous low fever.
o  Irregular menstruation, amenorrhoea, dysmenorrhoea, postpartum bleeding.
o  Skin patches, haematemesis, and epistaxis due to Heat entering in the ying-Blood system.
o  Red, swollen and painful joints due to Heat-bi syndrome.

Combinations
o  For low fever, add Bie Jia/Di Gu Pi/Qing Hao.
o  For irregular menstruation, add Chuan Xiong/Dang Gui.
o  For high fever, combine with Huang Lian Jie Du Tang.
o  Can be added to Tao Ren/Hong Hua and Si Wu Tang for menstrual problems due to Blood stasis complicated with Heat.
