Attributes and Domain
sweet, slightly bitter, warm; Liver, Stomach Large Intestine

Major therapeutic action
Stops bleeding and eliminates fixed stabbing pain.

Dosage
The typical proportion when added to a constitutional formula is 6:1 formula to addition (15 grams in 75- 90 grams of formula). If a stronger effect is desired more can be added. When used alone the dose is three grams 2-3 times daily.

Indications
o  This is one of the most interesting herbs in the materia medica. It has the unusual property of being able to stop bleeding without causing stagnation and pain, and thus has a very wide application in all bleeding disorders and a host of stagnation patterns with fixed stabbing pain.

Cautions and contraindications
None noted.
Contraindicated during pregnancy.

Combinations
o  With Gui Pi Tang for menorrhagia associated with emotional disturbances and weakness and lethargy.
o  With Huang Lian Jie Du Tang for bleeding with heat.
o  For abnormal uterine bleeding with heat and bloating combined with Xiao Yao San and Shan Zhi Zi & Mu Dan Pi.
o  For abnormal uterine bleeding heat and mild to subclinical anaemia, combined with Si Wu Tang and Huang Lian Jie Du Tang.
o  With Wu Jin Wan for dysmenorrhoea and heavy bleeding with sharp stabbing pain.
