Fang Feng

acrid, sweet,
slightly warm
expels Wind, relieves the Exterior, removes Damp, relieves convulsion, stops diarrhoea, stops bleeding

Bai Zhu

bitter, sweet,
warm
strengthens the Spleen, dries Damp, induces diuresis, stops sweating, calms foetus


Major therapeutic action
Soothes the Liver, stops diarrhoea.

Dosage
The typical proportion when added to a constitutional formula is 6:1 formula to addition (15 grams in 75- 90 grams of formula). If a stronger effect is desired more can be added. When used alone the dose is three grams twice daily.

Indications
o  Diarrhoea with abdominal pain due to excessive Liver and deficient Spleen, which is commonly seen in allergic colonitis, acute enteritis.

Cautions and contraindications
None noted.
Bai Zhu is contraindicated in patients with hyperactivity of Fire due to yin deficiency, thirst and insufficient Body Fluid.

Combinations
o  For diarrhoea with abdominal pain, Gan Cao/Bai Shao can be added.
o  Jin Ling Zi San can be added to alleviate abdominal pain.
