Jiu Jie Chang Pu

Yuan Zhi

bitter, acrid calms the mind, transforms Phlegm


Major therapeutic action
Clears the head and sharpens the mind, disperses Phlegm.


Dosage
The typical proportion when added to a constitutional formula is 6:1 formula to addition (15 grams in 75- 90 grams of formula). If a stronger effect is desired more can be added. When used alone the dose is three grams twice daily.

Indications
o  Phlegm congesting the head. This manifests as various concentration and memory problems, and a sensation in the head described by patients as ‘fuzzy’, ‘woolly’, ‘muzzy’ or ‘thick’. 
o  Somnolence, disordered sleep pattern (sleepy in the day, but insomnia at night).

Cautions and contraindications
Caution in patients with signs of dryness and/or afternoon or low grade fever.
None noted.

Combinations
o  With Xiao Chai Hu Tang for residual heavy or fuzzy headedness in the aftermath of a viral or other illness (as in post-viral syndrome).
o  With Si Jun Zi Tang and Chen Pi & Ban Xia for chronic fatigue patterns with muscle aches and a fuzzy head.
o  With Gui Pi Tang for anxiety, insomnia and daytime sleepiness with a weak pulse.
