Jie Geng

bitter, acrid, neutral dissolves Phlegm, relieves cough, benefits the throat, opens voices, promotes and frees Lung qi, discharges pus, treats inflammation

Xing Ren

bitter, warm, slightly toxic relieves cough, calms asthma, moistens the Intestines, relieves constipation


Major therapeutic action
Promotes the dispersing function of the Lung, relieves cough, moves qi, stops diarrhoea.

Dosage
The typical proportion when added to a constitutional formula is 6:1 formula to addition (15 grams in 75- 90 grams of formula). If a stronger effect is desired more can be added. When used alone the dose is three grams twice daily.

Indications
o  Cough due to exterior syndromes, stuffy chest, profuse sputum, sore throat, and hoarseness of voice.
o  Onset of dysentery, mucus and blood in the stools.

Cautions and contraindications
Xing Ren is not suitable for prolonged cough due to Lung deficiency.
None noted.

Combinations
o  For cough of Wind-Cold type, add Bai Qian/Qian Hu.
o  For cough of Wind-Heat type, add Sang Bai Pi/Chen Pi.
o  With profuse sputum, combine with Bai Qian/Qian Hu.
o  For cough due to Exterior deficiency syndrome, combine with Gui Zhi Tang.
