Introduction

Mylabris is the body onload="highlight();" of Mylabris phalerata or M. Cichorii. It's caught in July and August, scalded to death in boiling water and dried in the sun.

Western medical

ban mai is indicated in the treatment of bladder tumor, verruca vulgaris, neurodermatitis, chronic hepatitis B, esophageal cancer and cardia cancer in middle and late stage, etc..

Eastern medical

Pattern: Attacks Toxin, erodes sores, breaks Blood and dissolves lumps.
Properties: Pungent, Cold, Toxin.
Channels entered: Large Intestine, Small Intestine, Liver, Kidney.

Chemical constituents

The drug contains cantharidin, fat, resin, formic acid and pigment.

Pharmacological actions

Vesiculating effect

ban mao could rubefy and vesiculate the skin and mucous.

Anti-tumor effect

ban mao extract had obvious killing and inhibitory effect on liver cancer of ascitic type in mice, and significantly inhibit the amount of ascites in liver cancer of ascitic type, improve various symptoms in cancers.

Cantharidin had dosage-independent inhibitory effect on liver cancer of ascitic type in mice. It could prolong the survival time of mice with ARS of ascitic type. Derivatives of cantharidin all had significant anti-tumor effect.

Others

Water immersion of ban mao (1:4) had inhibitory effect on some dermal dermomycosis to different degrees in vitro.

Clinical Studies

Bladder tumor

ban mao cooked with eggs or Compound Ban Mao Pill was used in a complex treatment for bladder tumors. 23 cases were treated, 3 clinically cured, 1 markedly effective, 14 effective and 5 ineffective. 7 cases survived out of 13 cases in the 5-year follow-up survey.

Verruca vulgaris

Yellow water-drop like secretions from live ban mao with head removed was applied to the affected area of verruca vulgaris, on which the skin was peeled off and blood was seen. 100 cases were treated and cured, no side effects were found.

Neurodermatitis

3g ban mao was soaked into 100ml of 3% iodine tincture for 4~10 days. The affected area was washed with 1:5000 potassium permanganate solution and then applied with ban mao iodine tincture, 3~4 times daily, till cured. 10 cases were treated and cured. The courses varied from 17 days to 48 days.

Chronic hepatitis B

Method 1. Oral administration: Yi Gan Ning Pill (Each pill contains 0.1mg crude drug), 3~5 pills, tid, after meals. Method 2. Oral administration with Ban Mao Injection: Yi Gan Ning Pill, 3 pills tid; 1 ampoule of Ban Mao Injection (each 2ml contains 20mg crude drug) for intramuscular injection every 5 days. In both methods, 3 months as a course of treatment, with and interval of 5~7 days, usually 2 courses in all. 304 cases were treated, 128 were basically cured, 75 markedly effective, 69 improved and 32 ineffective. .

Esophageal cancer and cardia cancer in middle and late stage

Basic formula of Complex Ban Mao Pill: ban mao 10~16 pieces; da zao 30 pieces; cao he che 50g; sheng huang qi 40g, ren shen, e zhu, bai zhu, ji xing zi, tian san qi, ban xia, pao shan jia, fu ling, 30g each; qian cao, cheng xiang, bu gu zhi, 25g each; gan cao 20g. Modify the formula according to accompanied symptoms. The drugs were made into pills of 10g each. 2 pills, tid, 3 months as a course of treatment. 126 cases were treated, 14.29% were completely or partially remitted, the effective rate was 26.19%. Follow-up surveys showed that 61 cases survived more than 1 year, 17 cases over 3 years, 3 cases over 5 years, 8 cases over 10 years.

Other conditions

ban mao was used in external treatment for facial paralysis, tennis elbow, tenosynovitis, scapulohumeral periarthritis, arthritis, rhinitis, alopecia, mumps, enteritis caused by rotavirus and psoriasis, and was effective.
