Rhizoma Pinelliae is the dried tuber of Pinellia ternala (Thunb.) Breit. (Fam. Araceae). The drug is collected in summer and autumn, washed clean, removed from the outer bark and fibrous root, and dried in the sun.

Effects on digestive system

Aqueous extraction-alcohol precipitation fluid of ban xia had significant preventing or treating effect on gastric ulcer induced by antinfan, pylorus ligation or acetic acid. It also certain inhibitory effect on stress ulcer, and could significantly decrease gastric juice, lower the acidity of free acid and total acid, and inhibit the activity of pepsin.

Raw ban xia had obvious inhibitory effect on gastric secretary function in normal rats, but had obvious promoting effect on gastrointestinal movements.

Embryotoxicity

ban xia or raw ban xia decoction had significant embryotoxicity and increased dead fetus but had no harm to the female parent. This was not caused by injury to chromosome.

Effects on the respiratory system

Gastrogavage of raw ban xia, ban xia prepared with ginger and alum-ban xia decoction had significant inhibitory effect on cough induced by stimulating superior laryngeal nerve of cat or intrapleural injection of iodine solution. This effect was related to the alkaloids of ban xia.

Antitumor effect

PTA(exogenous agglutinin) isolated from the fresh ban xia bulbs could agglutinate human liver tumor cell, Ehrlich carcinoma and ascitic type of liver cell. Experiments showed that the polysaccharide ingredients in ban xia PMN also had anti-tumor effects.

Others

ban xia had inhibitory effect on isolated heart of animals and could antagonize experimental arrhythmia. It could slightly lower the eye pressure of rabbits.

Refractory vomiting and hiccup

Compound Sheng Ban Xia Tang (experiential formula): sheng ban xia, xuan fu hua, tai zi shen, huo xiang, 10g each; sheng jiang 20g; chen pi 6g; fu ling 15g; shi di 10 pieces. With Stomach Heat, add huang qin; with Stomach Cold, add ding xiang; with Liver depression, add chai hu. 1 dose every day. 104 cases of refractory vomiting and hiccup were treated, 91 cured, 10 markedly effective, 3 improved and 2 ineffective. The formula was not suitable for prolonged use, usually 3~4 doses were administrated.

Sinus tachycardia

Formula: ban xia, qing pi, dang gui, chi shao, sheng zao ren, gua lou, sang ji sheng, 10g each; dan shen, fu ling, 12g each; zhen zhu mu 20g. Modify the formula according to accompanied symptoms. 1 dose every day, 10 days as a course of treatment, 3 courses totally. 77 out of 85 treated cases were effective.

Meniere's syndrome

Experiential formula: ban xia 12g, chen pi 10g, fu ling 20g, ze xie 30g, gou teng 15g, gui zhi 8g, bai zhu 12g, dan shen 10g, yi mu cao 12g, sheng jiang 10g. Modify the formula according to accompanied symptoms. 1 dose every day, 7 days as a course of treatment. 1~3 courses totally. Among 68 treated cases, 25 cured, 41 improved and 2 ineffective.

Severe insomnia

Modified Ban Xia Shu Mi Tang: ban xia 40g decocted for 2 hours at first, then add 50g shu mi. Other formulas were combined according to TCM differentiation. 30 cases were treated, 15 markedly effective, 12 effective and 3 ineffective.

Bile reflux gastritis

zhi ban xia 10g, dai zhe shi 30g, su geng 10g, dang shen 10g, chuan lian zi 10g. Modify the formula according to accompanied symptoms. 1 dose every day, 15 doses for the first course of treatment. Among 32 treated cases, 12 were cured, 15 markedly effective, 4 effective and 1 ineffective.

Bronchitis

Experimental formula: qing ban xia 6g, zhi dan xing 30g, chen pi 45g, fu ling 45g, huang qin 30g, lian qiao 30g, sheng gan cao 30g, zhi feng fang 60g, bei mu 30g. The drugs were made into powder. 6g tid, 10 days as a course treatment. 36 cases of acute and chronic bronchitis were treated, and 6 cured, 17 markedly effective, 9 improved, 4 ineffective.

Tumors

Water-soluble extracts from ban xia were made into tablets for oral administration, each tablet was equal to 10g crude drug, 2~3 tablets, tid, after meals. 247 cases of cervical carcinoma at different stages were treated with this method for over 2 months' course of treatment, and 63 cases were short-term cured, 84 markedly effective, 44 improved, the total effective rate was 77.3%. And it had an effective rate of 96.7% in patients at stage I, 74.7% in stage II, and 74.2% in stage III. Peeled fresh ban xia was made into pills after being smashed into paste, 2 g each time, 3~4 times daily. The pill was put under the tongue root and swallowed to treat 30 cases of obstruction in esophagus and cardia cancer. In the 25 patients of obstruction due to esophagus cancer, 9 were markedly effective, 12 improved; among 5 patients of cardia cancer, 2 were markedly effective. The administration was usually no more than 30 days.

sheng ban xia was decocted in water for over 15 minutes, modification was made according to different accompanying symptoms. 1 dose every other day, for consecutive 20 doses. Among treated 91 cases of thyroid tumor, 48 was cured, and 15 improved.
