Fructus Psoraleae corylifoliae is the dried ripe fruit of Psoralea corylifolia L. (Fam. Leguminosae). The infructescence is collected in autumn when the fruit is ripe, dried in the sun, and the fruit is gathered, removed from foreign matter.

Effects on cardiovascular system

Isobavachalcone could dilate isolated coronary artery of Guinea pigs, rabbits, cats and rats, and it could antagonize the contracting effects of pituitrin on coronary artery. It could also increase the myocardial contractive in Guinea pigs and rats.

Effects on skin

Coumarin and its derivative contained in bu gu zhi had light sensitiveness. After oral administration or external application to the skin, the pigment in the skin could re-generate after sun or ultraviolet radiation irradiation.

Effects on smooth muscle

bu gu zhi extract had exciting effect on isolated or in vivo intestinal canal. It could loosen isolated uterine of Guinea pigs. bu gu zhi could contract in vivo uterine and shorten bleeding time, decrease amount of bleeding. It has anti-spasm effect on smooth muscle spasm of isolated trachea in Guinea pigs caused by histamine.

Anti-bacterial effect

Ethanol preparation of bu gu zhi could inhibit tubercle bacillus. bu gu zhi extract had inhibitory effect on staphylococcus and fungi.

Bronchial asthma

Acupoint injection of Bu Gu Zhi Injection 4mg (containing 4g crude drug) to Ding Chuan and other acupoints, 30 days as a course of treatment. 35 cases of bronchial asthma were treated, and the effective rate of asthma relieving was 84.4%.

Sick sinus syndrome

Bu Gu Zhi Tablet (each tablet containing 1.4g crude drug), 3~5 tablets, tid, 30 days as a course of treatment. 10 cases were also treated with etiological treatment. After treatment, heart rate was averaged increased by 20 times per minute.

Leucopoenia

Mildly fried bu gu zhi was grounded into fine powder and made into honeyed pill, 6g per pill, 1~3 pills tid, taken with salt water, 4 weeks as a course of treatment, 1~2 courses totally. 19 cases were treated and 18 were effective.

Psoriasis

Bu Gu Zhi Injection (each ml containing 1g crude drug), 4 ml for intramuscular injection every day, 10 times as a course of treatment with 3 days' interval. The effective rate was 93%.

Leucoderma

Bu Gu Zhi Tablet (each tablet containing 5mg crude drug), 15mg~120mg every day, with external application of 1% liquid medicine. Among 27 treated cases, 25 were effective.
