Plantain Herb is the dried herb of Plantago asiatica L. or Plantago depressa Willd. (Fam. Plantaginaceae). The drug is collected in summer, removed from soil, and dried in the sun.

The herb can be used to treat urinary stone, urinary system infections, prostatic hyperplasia, bacillary dysentery, chronic bronchitis, hepatitis, tonsillitis, and chylous urine, etc..

The main ingredients of this herb are plantagin, aucubin, 3,4-dihydroaucubin, 6'-o-b-glucosylaucubin, catalpol, ursolic acid, b-sitosterol, etc..

Diuretic effect

Intravenous injection of Che Qian Cao Injection made from water extraction-alcohol precipitation to dogs at the dosage of 0.5g crude drug/kg could increase urine volume.

Antitussive effect

Water decoction of che qian cao at the dosage over 20mg(crude drug)/kg had antitussive effect in cats on cough induced by electric stimulation. The cough could be completely suppressed at the dosage of 60mg(crude drug)/kg. Gastrogavage of che qian cao at the dosage of 30mg(crude drug)/kg to mice had significant antitussive effect on cough induced by ammonia.

Expectorant effect

Administration of concentrated water decoction of che qian cao through stomach tube at the dosage of 4ml (equal to 1g crude drug)/kg could obviously increase the secretions of tracheae.

Anti-asthmatic effect

in vitro tests showed that water decoction of che qian cao at the concentration of 1g/ml could antagonize the excitatory effect of histamine on isolated guinea pigs tracheae.

Anti- pathogenic microorganism effect

Water immersion of che qian cao at the concentration of 1:4 had inhibitory effect on Trichophyton concentricum and Microsporum lanosum, etc.. Its ethanol extract at the concentration of 15mg/ml could kill leptospira.

Urinary stones

Modified San Jin Xiao Shi Tang (jin qian cao, hai jin sha, ji nei jin, che qian cao, hua shi, shi wei, qu mai, niu xi, wang bu liu xing, hu po, etc.) was used to treat 88 cases of urinary stones (9 cases of kidney stone and 75 cases of ureter stone). 48 cases were cured, and 29 effective.

Urinary system infections

Xiao Lin Tang (che qian cao, jin qian cao, han lian cao, yi mu cao, di jing cao, bian xu, pu gong ying, sheng zhi zi, huang qin, bai mao gen, gan cao shao, etc.) was used to treat 150 cases of cute urinary system infections. 47 cases out of 50 nephropyelits were cured, 42 cases out of 46 acute attack of chronic nephropyelits were cured, 54 cases of cystitis and urethritis were all cured.

Acute nephritis

Fu Fang Che Qian Cao Tang (fresh che qian cao, dong gua pi, yu mi xu, etc.) was used to treat 30 cases of acute glomerulonephritis, and 26 were cured, 4 improved.

Prostatic hyperplasia

Sheng Jiang Yi Qi Jie Long Tang (che qian cao, huang qi, jie geng, sheng ma, dang gui wei, tao ren, niu xi, wang bu liu xing, fu ling, gan cao shao, etc.) was used to treat 34 cases of senile prostatic hyperplasis, and 23 were markedly effective, 8 effective.

Chronic bronchitis

Decoction of che qian cao at the concentration of 60% (w/v), 20~40ml, tid was used to treat 67 cases of chronic bronchitis, and 11 cured, 5 markedly improved, 40 improved.

Bacillary dysentery

Fresh leaves of che qian cao was made into 100% decoction, 60~120 even 200ml, tid, or q4h, for 7~10 consecutive days. 43 acute and 45 chronic bacillary dysentery were treated, and 63 cured, 11 improved.

Acute hepatitis with jaundice

Dried che qian cao 60g, 2 doses daily, water decoction. 85 cases of acute hepatitis with jaundice were treated, and 47 cases were cured (short-term), 37 improved.

Acute tonsillitis

Modified Che Xia Mixture (che qian cao, xia ku cao, jing jie, bai zhi, da li zi, mai dong) was used to treat 45 cases of acute tonsillitis, and 43 cured, 1 improved.

Chylous urine

Formula consisting of che qian cao, shan zha, fu ling, bi xie, bing lang, di long and hai zao was used to treat 32 cases of chylous urine in the late stage of filariasis, 1 dose daily, 15 days as a course of treatment. 20 cases were cured, 8 markedly effective and 3 improved.
