Rice Bean is the dried ripe seed of Phaseolus calcaratus Roxb. or Phaseolus angularis Wight (Fam. Leguminosae). The plant is uprooted in autumn when the fruit is ripe but not dehiscent, and dried in the sun. The seed is collected, removed from foreign matter, and dried in the sun again.

| Bacterial inhibitory effect |
chi xiao dou had inhibitory effect on staphylococcus aureus, Shigella flexneri and typhoid bacillus. |

| Acute nephritis |
chi xiao dou 30g, lian qiao 15g, qian cao gen 10g, pu huang 10g, bai mao gen 15g were used to treat 118 cases of acute nephritis. After 1~3 months treatment, 113 cases were cured. |
| Skin diseases |
chi xiao dou 30g, lian qiao 15g, sang bai pi 15g, tao ren 15g. were used as the main ingredients to treat 58 cases of skin diseases (16 urticaria, 10 tinea versicolor, 10 allergic purpura, 6 erythema multiforme, 4 herpes zoster and 12 others). Results: 49 cases were cured, 6 markedly effective, and 3 ineffective. |
| Acute hepatitis |
chi xiao dou 15g, ma huang 9g, xing ren 9g, lian qiao 15g, chen pi 15g, yin chen 30g, da qing ye 24g, huo xiang 12g. This formula was used to treat 1 case of acute hepatitis with jaundice. The patient was cured after 26 cases and no abnormal conditions in the 2-year follow up. |
| Hepatorenal syndrome |
chi xiao dou 30g, lian qiao 12g, yin chen 30g, fu ling pi 30g, ting li zi 10g, da zao 7 pieces. 2 cases of hepatorenal syndrome were treated, after 14 doses, all symptoms were improved: the jaundice disappeared, hepatic function, routine urine test and urea nitrogen were restored to normal. |
