Fructus Leonuri is the dried ripe fruit of Leonurus heterophyllus Sweet (Fam. Labiatae). The aerial part of the plant is cut down in autumn when the fruit is ripe, and dried. The fruit is tapped out, and removed from foreign matter.

The herb is mainly indicated in the treatment of menstrual disorders, amenorrhea, hysmenorrhea, inflammation of the eye with formation of corneal opacity, dizziness and headache.

Blood pressure lowering effect

Intravenous injection of water or ethanol-water immersion to anaesthetized animals could lower blood pressure.

Toxicity

Oral administration of 30g stir-fried chong wei zi at one time could induce poisoning symptoms such as stuffy chest, general weakness and aches, and inability to move the lower limbs, etc in 4~6 hours.

Hypertension

chong wei zi, sang zhi and sang ye, 10~15g each. The herbs were decocted into 1500ml juice for 30 minutes' foot soaking. The method could effectively lower the blood pressure.
