Tendrilleaf Fritillary Bulb is the dried bulb of Fritillaria cirrhosa D. Don, Fritillaria unibracteata Hsiao et K. C. Hsia, Fritillaria przewalskii Maxim. or Fritillaria delavayi Franch. (Fam. Liliaceae). According to the different characters, the drug derived from the former three are known as "Songbei" and "Oingbei", respectively, and the drug derived from the latter is known as "Lubei". The drug is collected in summer and autumn, or when the snow melts, removed from fibrous root, coarse bark and soil, and dried in the sun or at a lower temperature.

chuan bei mu contains various alkaloids, such as chinpeimine, fritiminine, beilupeimine, songpeimine, sipeimine, minpeimine, verticine, verticinine, fritillarine and fritimine, etc..

Effects on the blood pressure

Intravenous injection of fritimine had persistent blood pressure lowing effect which was accompanied with temperatory respiration inhibition. Sipeimine could lower the blood pressure of anaesthetized dogs.

Effects on the smooth muscle

Sipeimine could significantly relax isolated ileum of guinea pigs, duodenum of rabbits, uterine of rats and in vivo small intestine of dogs. Fritimine could increase the tensility of isolated uterine of guinea pigs and could excite the uterine.

Anti-tussive and expectorant effects

Alcohol extract of bei mu had significant expecotrant effect, and it also had anti-tussive effect. Fluid extract of chuan bei mu, alkaloids and saponins of chuan bei mu had expectorant effect to different degrees.

Others

Fritimine could elevate the blood sugar.

Prostate hyperplasia

bei mu, ku shen, dang shen, 25g each, water decoction. It would take effect on prostate hyperplasia after 3~6 doses. Among 35 treated cases, 27 were cured and 8 ineffective.

Whooping cough

For children under2 years old, bai bu and bei mu, 10g each; 3~5 years, 15g each; >5years, 20g each. Water decoction 200ml~500ml, being taken in three days, three times every day. 50 cases of whooping cough were treated and all were effective.

Superficial gastrits

Ji Bei Yan Hu San (experiential formula): equal amount of bai ji, chuan bei and yuan hu were grouded into fine powder, 4g bid. Decoction according to differentiation was also given. 200 cases of superficial gastritis were treated for a course of 30 days. All were effective except 6 cases.

Chronic bronchitis

chuan bei was made into tablets, 5 tablets, 4 times every day. The dose every day was equal to 6g crude drug. 10 days as a course of treatment. The mthod was used to treat chronic bronchitis, and the total effective rate was 86.46%.
