Zedoray Rhizome is the dried rhizome of Curcuma phaeoculis Valeton, Curcuma kwangsiensis S.G. Lee et C. F. Liang or Curcuma wenyujin Y.H. Chen et C. Ling (Fam. Zingiberaceae). The drug derived from the last species is commonly known "Wenezhu". The drug is collected in winter when the aerial part wither, washed clean, steamed or boiled thoroughly, dried in the sun or dried at a low temperature, removed from fibrous root and foreign matter.

 Western medical Back to Top
e zhu is indicated in the treatment of various viral infections, cervical cancer and cervical erosion, etc..

 Eastern medical Back to Top
  • Pattern: Breaks Blood, removes stagnant Blood, moves qi and relieves pain.
  • Properties: Pungent, bitter, warm.
  • Channels entered: Liver and Spleen.
 Chemical constituents Back to Top
e zhu mainly contains starch and volatile oil. The main ingredients of the oil aresesquiterpenes: zederone, zedoarone, furanodiene, curzerene, furanodienone, curdione, curcolone, curcumenol and curcumin, etc..

 Pharmacological actions Back to Top
Anti-tumor effects

Oral administration and intraperitoneal injection of E Zhu Injection to mice had inhibitory effect on S180. Curcumenol had inhibitory effect on S73, U14 and ehrlich carcinoma. E Zhu oil had direct destroying effect on ascites carcinoma and L615 WBC in vitro.

Effect of Rhizoma Curcumate Zedoariae and Rhizoma Sparganii on apoptosis of human lung cancer cell line A549

The object was to study the medhanism of inhibitory and tumor killing effects of two kinds of Chinese traditional herbs, rhizoma Curcumate zeloariae and Rhizoma Sparganii. Lung cancer cell line A549 was adopted as target cell. The research examined tumor cell apoptosis induced by the herbs with flow cytometry when the target cell was cultured with the herb substration for 24h. The substraction both two kinds of herbs can induce tumor cell apoptosis. The great synergic effect to induce target cell apoptosis was also found out. The results suggested that to induce target cells apoptosis is the man mechanism in inhibiting and killing tumor by the herbs.

Influence over immune functions

in vitro and in vivo tests showed that the mechanism of treating cervical cancer with e zhu lied not only in direct inhibitory and killing effect on cancer cells, but also active immune protecting effect.

Influence over blood rheology

Water extract-alcohol precipitation could lower plasma viscosity, whole blood viscosity under low shear rate, and packed cell volume, it could also inhibit platelet aggregation, lower platelet adhesion rate, inhibit in vitro thrombosis and fibrinogen.

Others

e zhu could elevate WBC. Alcohol extractum of e zhu could terminate early pregnancy. It could obviously lower serum T4 in mice. E Zhu Injection could significantly increase the blood volume and lower serum creatinine urea nitrogen in rabbits with acute renal failure induced by glycerin. E Zhu Oil had anti-bacterial and anti-viral effects on some bacteria and viruses.

 Clinical Studies Back to Top
Infantile viral enteritis

30 cases of infantile viral enteritis were treated with intravenous drip of 0.04% E Zhu Oil-Glucose Injection at the dosage of 100mg/kg, qd in addition to virazole, 5~7 days as a course of treatment. The curative time and fever-allaying time were both superior to those in the group treated with western medicine only.

Various infantile viral diseases

E Zhu Oil had inhibitory or killing effect on respiratory syncytial virus, influenza virus A1 and A3, rubella virus, chickenpox virus, etc.. 84 infantile cases of viral infections were randomly divided into E Zhu Oil treated group and control group treated with Ribavirin. Both groups had similar fever-allaying time, and symptom or sign improving time and curative time. There's no significant difference between the two groups.

Cervical cancer

Water solution of E Zhu Volatile Oil, 10~30ml for local injection, accompanied with intravenous drip. After around 15 days, local necrosis was seen in the affected area. The side effects included pain and vertigo, etc..

Cervical erosion

Sterilized cotton ball with E Zhu Ointment (each kg containing 40ml volatile oil) was placed in the affected area of cervical erosion, once daily. The effective rate was over 90%.
