Ramulus Cinnamomi cassiae is the dired young stem of Cinnamomum cassia Presl (Fam. Lauraceae). The drug is collected in spring and summer, removed from leaf, dried in the sun or dried in the sun after sliced.

gui zhi contains volatile oil (cassia oil), and its main ingredients include cinnamic aldehyde, cassic acid and cinnamyl acetate, etc..

Anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory effect

gui zhi had quite strong inhibitory effect on fungi, it could inhibit the growth of fungi at the concentration of 1กม10-5, and the inhibitory effect on fungi was dosage-dependent. It volatile oil had quite strong inhibitory effect on anthrax bacillus, staphylococcus aureus, comma bacillus, salmonella, shigella dysenteriae, typhoid bacillus and bacillus paratyphosus. Cassia oil and cinnamic alcohol had inhibitory effect on tubercle bacillus. Decoction of gui zhi (1:20) had inhibitory effect on strain Beijing 68-1 of influenza virus and orphan virus. In addition, gui zhi had anti poliomyelitis virus and Echo virus effects.

Effects on central nervous system

Cinnamic aldehyde contained in the herb had significant sedative effect. Oral administration of 250mg/kg~500mg/kg to mice could reduce spontaneous activities.

Cinnamic aldehyde could strengthen the stomach by exciting the salivary gland, increase enterokinesia by exciting the gastrointestinal smooth muscles, dilate dermal vessels by stimulating nerves and improve peripheral blood circulation.

Bidirectional regulating effect on body onload="highlight();" temperature

Gastrogavage of Gui Zhi Tang could inhibit the temperature lowering effect caused by injection of caerulin in rats in cold environment. Gui Zhi Tang took its antifebrile effect partly by interfering with the receptor and function of caerulin.

Influence over immune function

Gui Zhi extracturm could inhibit the addiment activity and had quite strong anti-allergic effect.

Expectorant and anti-tussive effects

Cassia oil was excreted through the lungs after absorption and could dilute the secretions in the trachea.

Effect on the uterus

Cassia oil had special hyperemization effect on the uterus.

Diuretic effect

gui zhi had the strongest diuretic effect among the herbs used in Wu Ling San.

Asthma

gui zhi, gao liang jiang, zhi fu zi, zhi ban xia, rou gui, da hui xiang, chuan hua jiao, bai jie zi, dan shen and xin yi was used as the basic formula to treat infantile bronchial asthma. 1 dose every day. Among the 50 treated cases, 18 were clinically cured, 24 markedly effective, 7 effective and 1 ineffective.

Premature beat

23 cases of frequent auricular premature beat and 18 cases of ventricular premature beat were treated with xi yang shen, zhi gan cao, gui zhi, dang gui, shui zhi, 5g each; ku shen, dan shen, ge gen, 30g each; xuan shen 15g, chuan 12g. Modify the formula according to accompanied symptoms. 21 cases were cured, 16 markedly effective, 4 ineffective.

Refractory nephrotic syndrome

fu ling, yi mu cao, qian shi, ze xie, 15g each; gui zhi, gan cao 6g each; bai mao gen 20g each; bai zhu 12g. Modify the formula according to accompanied symptoms. 1 dose every day, water decoction, 3 months as a course of treatment. Hormone therapy was also applied. 17 cases of refractory nephritic syndrome was treated, and 9 cases were completely relived, 5 basically relieved, 2 partly relieved and 1 ineffective.

Women diseases

gui zhi, tai wu yao, 15g each; chuan xiong, jing jie, hong hua 10g each; ai ye, yi mu cao 15g each; zhui di feng 30g. The formula was wrapped and steamed, then applied to the affected area, once ~ twice every day, 5 days as a course of treatment, and change the herbs every five days. The method was used to treat lower abdominal pain caused by pelvic inflammation. after 1~4 courses, 28 cases were cured.

gui zhi, fu ling, tao ren, hong hua, chi shao, zi shi ying, san qi, chuan shan jia, wu zhu yu, zhi nan xing, niu xi and wang bu liu xing were formulated as a basic formula to carcinoma of uterus, 1 dose every day, 30 doses as a course of treatment. Among 15 cases, 3 got the best therapeutic effect, 10 effective and 2 died.

gui zhi, fu ling, dan pi, chi shao, tao ren, 15g each; huang yao zi 30g, ji nei jing 15g, shui zhi 15g (grounded into powder and encapsulated), li zhi he 15g and wu yao 15g were used to treat ovarian cyst, 1 dose every day, 3 months as a course of treatment for 1~2 courses. 300 cases were treated, and 225 were cured, 30 improved, 15 ineffective.

gui zhi, fu ling, tao ren, dan pi, shao yao, san leng, e zhu, chuan lian zi, 10g each; yan hu, dan shen, 12g each; and xia ku cao, shan ci gu, 6g each were formulated as a basic formula to treat 95 cases of endometriosis. 36 cases were markedly effective, 43 effective and 15 ineffective.

gui zhi, bie jia (decocted first), chi shao, 15g each; san leng, dan shen, wang bu liu xing, sheng mu li (decocted first), 30g each, and zhe chong 6g were formulated as the main formula to treat uterine fibroid at the early stage, and 30 cases were cured, 8 effective, 2 ineffective.

Sciatica

gui zhi 12g; bai shao, dan shen, 30g each; niu xi, gu sui bu, 15g each; mu gua, tao ren, hong hua, xiao hui xiang, zhi ru xiang, zhi mo yao, chuan lian zi, 10g each; and wei ling xian, sang ji sheng 20g each were formulated as a basic formula to treat 120 cases of sciatica, 1 dose every day, water decoction. 31 cases were cured, 46 were markedly effective and 9 ineffective.

Keratitis

gui zhi 9g; bai shao, lian qiao, 15g each; mu zei cao, huang qi, bai zhu, fu ling, mi meng hua, bai ji li, 12g each; jie geng 10g; and chan tui, fang feng, bai jiang can 6g each were formulated as the basic formula totreat 83 cases (108 affected eyes). After 5~54 days' treatment, 51 cases (70 eyes) were cured, 28 cases (33 affected eyes) were effective, 4 (5 eyes) ineffective, the total effective rate was 95.19%.

Allergic purpura

gui zhi, bai shao, zhi gan cao, sheng jiang, da zao, 6g each; dan shen 15g (dosage for children at around 10 years old), 1 dose every day, water decoction, till purpura disappeared completely. And another 3~5 doses to consolidate the effect. 33 cases out of 35 treated cases were cured, and the other 2 improved.
