Caulis Piper kadsurae is the dried stem of Piper kadsura (Choisy) Ohwi (Fam. Piperaceae). The drug is collected in summer and autumn, removed from root and leaf, and dried in the sun.

hai feng teng is usually indicated in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, sciatica, acute lumba sprain and sequelae of stroke, etc..

hai feng teng contains futoxide, futoenone, futoamide, futoguinol and volatile oil, whose main ingredients include a-pinene, b-pinene and limonene.

Futoxide could inhibit swelling and pain. It also had anti-tussive effect.

Rheumatoid arthritis

Wu Teng Tang (hai feng teng, qing feng teng, ren dong teng, luo shi teng, 15g each; lei gong teng 6~9g (decocted first); bai hua she, bai jie zi, 10g each; wu gong 3 pieces, yin yang huo 12g; dang gui, ji xue teng, sheng huang qi, 30g each) was modified according to TCM differentiation to treat rheumatoid arthritis, 1 dose every day, water decoction, 1 month as a course of treatment. After 2 courses, among 101 treated cases, 21 were cured, 53 markedly effective, 8 improved and 19 ineffective.

Sciatica

hai feng teng, ji xue teng, pao shan jia, 30g aech; xu duan 18g; shan yao, chuan niu xi, chuan mu gua, qi she, 15g each; dang gui, gan cao, san qi, 9g each; wu gong 3 pieces. Modify the formula according to TCM differentiation, 1 dose daily, water decoction. 78 cases of sciatica were treated, and 65 were treated, 13 markedly effective.

Acute lumbar sprain

hai feng teng, xu duan, sang ji sheng, huai niu xi, 15g each; du huo, fang feng, jiang xiang, zhi ke, yan hu, 10g each; xi xin 3g; xiao hui xiang, qing gan cao, 5g each. 1 dose daily, water decoction, 10 doses as a course of treatment. 45 cases of acute lumbar sprain were treated, and 20 were markedly effective, 23 effective and 3 ineffective.

Sequelae of stroke

Tan Ke Yu Pill (hai feng teng, sheng huang qi, dan shen, xian he cao, bai jiang can, shen jin cao, qing feng teng, wine-prepared da huang, bai shao, ji xue teng, shui zhi) was used to treat 102 cases of sequelae of stroke. After 3 months' treatment, 66 were basically cured, 29 improved and 7 ineffective.
