Fructus Sophorae is the mature fruit of Sophora japonica L (Fam. Leguminosae). It's collected in winter, removed from foreign matter and dried in the sun.

huai jiao is indicated in the treatment of intestinal bleeding, hemorrhoids, uterine bleeding, bloody urine and dysentery with blood, etc..

huai jiao contains genistein, sophorieoside, sophorabioside, c-kaempferol glycoside, sophoraflavonoloside and rutin. It also contains sophorose.

Blood sugar elevating effect

huai jiao extracturm administrated to rabbits could transiently elevate the blood sugar.

Anti-pregnanct effect

Long term adminitration of genistein and aophoricoside at small dosages to mice had significant anti-pregnant effect.

Anti-oxidant effect

1. Isolation and identification of antioxidants from Sophora japonica.

A new flavonol triglycoside, kaempferol 3-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 --> 6)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 2)-beta-D-glucopyranoside (1), as well as two known kaempferol 3-O-[alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 --> 6)]-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 2)]-beta-D-glucopyranoside (2) and kaempferol 3-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 2)-beta-D-glucopyranoside-7-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranoside (3), were isolated from the n-BuOH extract of the pericarps of Sophora japonica by bioassay-guided fractionation. The structure of compound 1 was established by UV, IR, MS, and one- and two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy, including DEPT, NOESY, DQF-COSY, TOCSY, HMQC, and HMBC experiments. Compounds 1-3 showed antioxidative activity in DPPH and cytochrome-c assay using HL-60 cell system.

Hemorrhoids

External hemorrhoids: huai hua 30g, huai jiao 30g, huai zhi 30g, huai gen 30g, huai bai pi 30g, huai ye 30g. The decoction was used for sitting bath.

Internal hemorrhoids: huai jiao 15g, wu hua guo 30g. The drugs were stewed with large intestine of pig and is a food therapy.
