Effects on cardiovascular system

Water leach liquor, ethanol-water leach liquor and 30% ethanol leach liquor can all lower the blood pressure in anaesthetized animals. 0.15% alcohol preparation can increase the myocardial contractive of isolated toad heart but has no influence over the heart rate. 0.4% alcohol and aqueous liquor can increase the heart rate of isolated rabbit heart. 0.2g/gk alcohol preparation can increase the volume of blood flow in dogs and the effect is equal to that of 0.75mg/kg aminophyllin.

Effects of lowering blood fat and anti- arteriosclerosis

Gastrogavage of huang jing decoction to rabbits with experimental hyperlipoidemia can obviously decrease triglyceride, b-lipoprotein and blood cholesterol. Another report showed that compared with the control group, intramuscular administration of huang jing and chi shao (red peony) injection to rabbits with experimental arteriosclerosis can decrease the plaques on the inner membrane of the animal aorta and atherosclerosis of the coronary artery.

Effect of lowering blood sugar

Gastrogavage of huang jing extractum to rabbits can first increase and then lower the blood sugar, it showed significant inhibitory effect on the increasing blood level induced by adrenalin.

Effect of delaying aging

In silkworm fed with mulberry leaves soaked in water decoction of haung jing, the quantity of mulberry leaves would increase, and the larval stage and life-span would be prolonged.

Antibacterial effect

Guinea pigs with experimental tuberculosis were treated with huang jing decoction when they were infected with tubercle bacillus and when they had enlarged lymph nodes after being infected, and significant bacterium-inhibiting effect was shown, and the healthy conditions could be improved, the therapeutic effects were similar to those of isoniazide. In addition, haung jing had inhibitory effect on commonly seen pathogenic fungi to different extent; it could also inhibit typhoid bacillus and staphylococcus aureus.

Other functions

Improve lymphocyte transformation rate; increase immune function; promote the synthesis of DNA, RNA and protein; lower the plasma content of cAMP and cGMP; increase the survival rate of animals exposed to radiation; accelerate the proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells and restore the hematopoiesis.
