Rhizoma Dioscoreae Bulbiferae is the dried tuber of Dioscorea bulbifera L. (Fam. Dioscoreaceae). It's collected in summer, washed clean, removed from fibrous roots, sliced and dried in the sun.

huang yao zi contains various steride saponins (çÞÌåÔíß°). The total saponins can be hydrolyzed into disgenin and yamogenin, etc..

Effects on the thyroid gland

huang yao zi could antagonize mild goiter induced by potassium thiocyanate and had therapeutic effect on gouter due to iodine deficiency.

Others

Decoction and tincture of huang yao zi had inhibitory effect on frog hearts. It could inhibit isolated rabbit intestines, and excite the uterus of unpregnant rabbtis and guinea pigs.

Thyroid tumour

Daily administration in decoction for 5 to 8 weeks had an 80% overall rate of effectiveness for 25 patients in one study from Fujian

Thyroid Adenoma

In another study Huang Yao Zi was combined Mu Li, Hai Zao, Kun Bu, Shan Ci Gu, Xia Ku Cao, Yu Jin, Chuan Shan Jia, jiang Can, Tian Hua Fen, Xuan Shen. 37 out of 42 patients experiences full recovery.

Hyperthyroidism

Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang plus huang yao zi, xia ku cao, lian qiao, zhe bei mu, mu li, xuan shen and huang qi. Water decoction, 2 months as a course of treatment. 18 out of 20 treated cases of hyperthyroidism were effective.
