Fructus Momordicae charantiae is the fruit of Momordica charantia L. (Fam. Cucurbitaceae). It's collected in autumn and removed from foreign matter.

The herb is indicated in the treatment of febrile diseases, heat stroke, dysentery, carbuncles and other dermal inflammatory diseases.

The herb contains charantin which is the equimolecular mixture of ¦Â-Sitosterol-¦Â-D-glucoside and 5,25-Stigmastadien-3¦Â-ol-¦Â-D-glucoside. It also contains 5-HT and various amino acids.

ku gua could lower blood sugar and regulate immune function. It also had anti-bacterial, anti-tumor, anti-HIV and anti-mutationeffects.
