Semen Raphani is the dried ripe seed of Raphanus sativus L. (Fam. Cruciferae). The plant is cut up in summer when the fruit is ripe, dried in the sun. The seed is rubbed out, removed from foreign matter, and dried again in the sun.

lai fu zi is indicated in the treatment of swelling and pain in trauma, habitual constipation, bronchial asthma, bile reflux gastritis, manic-pressive psychosis and abdominal distention.

lai fu zi contains volatile oil and fatty oil. In volatile oil, there're methyl-mercaptan, a, b-hexenoic aldehyde; and in fatty oil, there're erucic acid, linoleic acid, octadecatrienoic acid and glycerol sinapate, etc.. It also contains sinapine and raphanin, b, g-sitosterol, etc..

Effects on the gastrointestinal tract |
lai fu zi preparations could increase the rhythmic contraction of isolated ileum of rabbits, and inhibit the emptying of isolated stomach of mice. It could increase the movement of small intestine and help digestion in the small intestine. |
Dilating blood vessles |
Lai Fu Zi injection could lower mean arterial pressure and mean pulmonary arterial pressure; it could lower the resistance of both body onload="highlight();" vessels and pulmonary vessles. It could also lower the blood pressure. |
Anti-bacterial effect |
Raphanin at the concentration of 1mg/ml had obvious inhibitory effect on bacillus coli and staphylococcus. |
Anti-fungi effect |
1:3 lai fu zi water infusion had inhibitory in vitro effect on six kinds of dermatomyces including Trichophyton concentricum.

Swelling and pain in Trauma |
sheng lai fu zi 60g were grounded into powder and mixed with hot wine for external application. |
Habitual constipation |
dang gui, shao yao, 45~60g; hua shi 12g; zhi ke 6g; lai fu zi, bing lang, 5g each; mu xiang, gan cao 3g. |
Bronchial asthma |
su zi, bai jie zi, lai fu zi, ting li zi, xi xin, ma huang, tian zhu huang, dan nan xing, chen pi, dan shen, gan cao. Water decoctio for aerosol inhalation. |
Bile reflux gastritis |
zhi ke 12g, dai zhe shi 20g, chai hu 6g, huang qin 10g, bai shao 20g, lai fu zi 10g, gan cao 6g. |
Manic-pressive psychosis |
lai fu zi 30g, bai jie zi 9g, mang xiao 12g, sheng da huang 30g. Water decotion |
Abdominal distention caused by intestinal adhesion |
Taong Bian Tang: chuan po, chao lai fu zi, 10~15g; mu xiang, wu yao, tao ren, chi shao, fan xie ye, 10g each;. Mang xiao 6g. Water decoction. |
