Fructus Viticis is the dried ripe fruit of Vitex trifolia L. var. simplicifolia Cham. or Vitex trifolia L. (Fam. Verbenaceae). The drug is collected in autumn when ripe, removed from foreign matter, and dried in the sun.

man jing zi contains rotundifuron, prerotundifuran, vitexilactone, previtexilactone, viexticarpin, casticin, luteolin, artemetin, P-hydroxybenzoic acid and vanillic acid, etc.. It also contains volatile oil, which contains camphene and pinene, etc..

Anti-bacterial effect

Water decotion of man jing zi had in vitro anti-bacterial effect on bacillus subilis, staphylococcus aureus, and bacillus proteus, bacillus coli, bacillus pyocyaneus and typhoid bacillus etc.. It could also inhibit Echo virus in vitro.

Lowering blood pressure

Water extract of Vitex trifolia could lower the blood pressure of rabbits. Its ingredient g-aminobutyric acid also had blood pressure-lowering effect.

Analgesic effect

70% carbinol extract of man jing zi had analgesic effect.

Anti-tumor effect

in vitro tests showed that hot water extract of man jing zi had an inhibitory rate of 50~70% on cervical cancer cell.

Others

man jing zi had anti-inflammatory and anti-coagualtion effect. It could inhibiti the formation of melanin.

Vascular headache

Xiao Lu Tong Decoction consisting of huang qi, ji xue teng, ye jiao teng, dan shen, 30g each; man jing zi 20g; dang gui 10g; chuan xiong, xiang fu, bai zhi, gao ben, suan zao ren, niu xi, 15g each were used to treat 104 cases of vascular headache, and the total effective rate was 94.2%.

Trigeminal neuralgia

chuan xiong, tao ren, hong hua, man jing zi, 9g each; ju hua, di long, bai shao, 12g each and xi xin 6g were used to treat 100 cases of trigeminal neuralgia, and the effective rate was 63%, which was superior to that of western medicine.

Headache due to low intracranial pressure

dang gui, sheng di, 12g each; chuan xiong, bai shao, huang qi, dang shen, bai zhu, 15g; man jing zi, ju hua, 10g each and gan cao 6g were used to treat postural headache due to low intracranial pressure, and the method had good effect.
