Semen Astragali complanati is the dried ripe seed of Astragalus complanatus R. Br. (Fam. Leguminosae). The plant is collected in late autumn and early winter when the fruit is ripe but not dehiscent, dried in the sun, and the seed tapped out, removed from foreign matter, and dried in the sun.

50% sha yuan zi decoction could increase the activity of phagocytes, and promote metabolism. It could also activate spleen lymphocytes. |

Deafness |
Bu Sui Yi Nao Kai Qiao Tang: sha yuan zi, chong wei z, 12g each; ju hua, man jing zi, gao ben, che qian zi, wu wei zi, gan cao, 9g each; fu xiao mai 30g; nu zhen zi, gou qi, sheng di, 15g each; tao ren 6g, bing pian 0.4g (grounded into powder and taken with water). chan tui, di fu zi and mu tong could be added according to TCM differentiation. 30 cases of deafness caused by side effects of streptomycin were treated. After 7~60 doses, all the cases were improved to different degree. |
Male infertility |
Gu Ben Sheng Jing Tang for yang deficiency of the Spleen and Kidney: sha yuan zi, yi zhi ren, hai gou shen, shan yu rou, gou qi, shou wu, fu peng zi, she chuang zi, rou cong rong, ba ji tian, yin yang huo, gan cao, water decoction, 1 dose every day. 56 out of 71 treated cases were cured. |
Impotence |
Tiao Gan Zhen Wei Tang (experiential formula): chai hu, zhi ke, xiang yuan, fo shou, bai shao, 10g each; chao sha yuan zi, xian mao, yin yang huo, gou qi, 12g each; mei gui hua, he huan hua, 6g each; zhi wu gong 1g. Modify the formula according to accompanied symptoms, water decoction, 1 dose every day. 23 out of 26 treated cases were cured. |
