Periostracum Serpentis is the dried epidermal membrane of Elaphe taeniura Cope, Elaphe carinata (Guenther) or Zaocys dhumnades (Cantor) (Fam. Colubridae). The drug is collected from the end of spring to early winter, removed from soil and sand, dried.

she tui contains a large amount of ossein and unsaturated fatty acids. It also contains various elements including S, P, Si, Fe, Ca, Al, Cl, Cr, K, Mg and Mn, etc..

Anti-inflammatory effect

she tui could inhibit the chemotaxis of WBC and the swelling caused by carrageenin and mustard seeds. It could also inhibit the vascular permeability.

Hemolysis inhibiting effect

she tui could inhibit hemolysis due to pressure.

Mumps

90 cases of mumps were trated with scrambled eggs with she tui, in 81% cases, the swelling was relieved within 2 days.

Otitis media

she tui was burnt to ash, grounded into fine powder and mixed with sesame oil. The oil was used to drip into the ear to treat otitis media, once daily or every other day. Among 21 treated cases, 19 were cured.

Others

she tui is reported to have effects on scrofula, folliculitis, boils, cellulites, stye and lymphangitis, etc..
