Gypsum is a plaster stone of sulfate of plaster stone group, containing mainly hydrated calcium sulfate (CaSO4-2H20). The drug is collected, removed from foreign matter and soil.

Anti-febrile effect

Raw shi gao had certain anti-febrile effect on animals with artificial fever, but it had no fever-allaying effect on normal body onload="highlight();" temperature.

Effects on cardiovascular system

Small dosage of shi gao infusion could excite isolated heart of toads and rabbits, while at large dosages, it had inhibitory effect. shi gao supernate over 1ml/kg could result in inhibited respiration, lowering blood pressure, decreased blood volume and heart rate.

Others

shi gao could increase the excitability of muscles and peripheral nerves. Small dosage of shi gao supernate could increase the amplitude of isolated small intestines and uterus, while at large dosage, it could decrease the intensity and amplitude.

Fever

shi gao 120g, ma huang 3g, gui zhi 3g. Water decoction, one dose daily. 200 cases of fever were treated, and 181 were effective.

Diabetes

Modified Bai Hu Tang: sheng shi gao, ren dong teng, 30g each; bei sha shen, sheng di, 20g each; zhi mu, xuan shen, 15g each; yu zhu, cang zhu, 10g each and huang bo 6g were made into pills to treat diabetes of Stomach Heat pattern. 2g, tid, 30 days as a course of treatment. The formula showed good effect.

Acute enteritis

han shui shi, sheng shi gao, hua shi, 30g each. 1 dose daily for mild case, 2~3 doses for severe cases. 115 cases (89%) were cured, 7 cases (4%) were cured and 13 (7%) ineffective.

Infantile high fever

sheng shi gao (decocted first) 20~30g, zhi mu 8~12g, ban lan gen 10~15g, qing tian kui, chan tui, cang zhu, 6~10g each, gan cao 3g. Modify the formula according to accompanied symptoms. 1 dose daily. 50 cases of infantile high fever (exteriorly contracted diseases and acute tonsillitis) were treated, 42 cases had fever allayed after 2 doses.

Infantile viral pneumonia

Ma Xing Shi Gan Tang plus huang qin, qian hu, chuan bei mu, sang bai pi, jin yin hua, lian qiao, yu xing cao, da qing ye, lu gen was used to treat 32 cases of infantile viral pneumonia, and 30 cases were cured, 2 improved.

Epidemic encephalitis b

Supplemented Bai Hu Tang which contained sheng shi gao 50~150g, zhi mu, da qing ye, qing hao, 10g each; ban lan gen 15g, chuan huang lian 5g, jing mi 30g, gan cao 6g was used to treat 78 cases of epidemic encephalitis b with appropriate modification. An Gong Niu Huang Wan or Zi Xue San, etc.. was accompanied. 5 days as a course of treatment. Results: 69 cases were cured, 4 improved and 5 dead.
