Folium Lycopus is the dried whole plant of Lycopodium clavatum Thunb (Fam. Lycopodiaceae). It's collected in summer and autumn, removed from earth and foreign matters, sliced and dried in the sun.

shi song contains alkaloids including lycopodine, clavatine, clavolonine, fawcettiine and lycodoline. It also contains vaniIlic acid, ferulic acid, azelaic acid, clavatol, lycoclavanol, and lycoclavanin etc..

Miscellaneous effects

Water infusion of shi song had anti-febrile effect on fever caused by hypodermic injection of hay infusion, and the effective ingredients were lycopodine and clavatine, etc.. L>ycopodine could regulate the blood pressure of anaesthetized animals, increase the contractive of frog heart. It had excitory effect on isolated small intestines of rats and guinea pigs. It could also excite the uterus of rabbits, rats and guinea pigs.

Rheumatoid arthritis

huang qi, luo shi teng, ji xue teng, 30g each; shen jing cao 18g, bai zhu, wu shao she, chuan niu xi, jiang huang, 15g; dang gui 12g; wei ling xian, suo yang, lao guan cao, lu feng fang, zhi gui ban, 10g each; gan cao 6g; wu gong 2 pieces. Modify the formula according to TCM differentiation. 1 dose daily, water decoction, for 4~12 weeks. Western drugs were also accompanied. 80 cases of rheumatoid arthritis were treated, 21 were markedly effective, 34 effective, 21 improved and 4 ineffective.

Hyperosteogeny

Zhu Yu Tong Bi Tang (gou ji, luo shi teng, 15g, du huo, dang gui, 10g each; qiang huo 6g; ru xiang, mo yao, 5g each; xue jie 3g, add jiang huang and sang zhi for upper limbs and shen jing cao, mu gua for lower limbs), 1 dose daily. 103 cases were treated for 15~43 doses, 68 were cured, 27 effective and 8 ineffective.

Scleroderma circumscriptum

qiang huo, du huo, qin jiao, fang feng, dang gui, bai shao, gui zhi, hong hua, 10g each; xi xin 3g; chuan xiong 6g; shu di, sang zhi, mu gua, huang qi, 15g each; fu ling 12g; gan cao 5g. Water decoction for oral administration. shen jing cao, tou gu cao, luo shi teng, hai feng teng, qian nian jian, zhui di feng, hong hua, du huo, dang gui, su mu 30g each; ji xue teng, sang zhi, huai zhi, liu zhi, 60g each, water decoction for external wash, twice daily, 3 months as a course of treatment. 16 cases of scleroderma circumscriptum were treated, 7 were markedly effective, 8 effective and 1 ineffective.
