Folium Pyrrosiae is the dried leaf of Pyrrosia sheareri (Bak.) Ching, Pyrrosia lingua (Thunb.) Farwell or Pyrrosia petiolosa (Christ) Ching (Fam. Polypodiaceae). The drug is collected all year round, removed from rhizome and root, and dried in the sun or in the shade.

Expectorant, anti-tussive and anti-asthmatic effects

shi wei decoction and its ingredients had expectorant, anti-tussive and anti-asthmatic effects.

Bacteria-inhibiting and anti-viral effects

shi wei had inhibitory effect on staphylococcus aureus, bacillus proteus, bacillus coli and influenza virus..

Others

shi wei could increase WBC in leucopenia resulted from chemotherapy or radiotherapy. shi wei decoction could increase the phagocytic ability of phagocytes.

Bronchial asthma

shi wei 75g, water decocion mixed with sugar candy 50g. 3 days as a course of treatment. 11 cases were treated, 7 cases had symptoms disappeared, 2 relieved and 2 ineffective.

Nephritis and pyelonephritis

shi wei leaves 2~3g were decocted with 500~1000ml water. 1 dose daily.

Shi Wei Tablet (each tablet contains 0.5g crude drug), 2~3 tablets, tid. 36 out of treated 39 cases of glomerulonephritis were effective, 17 out of 20 treated cases of pyelonephritis were effective.
