Fructus Polygoni Orientalis is the dried ripe fruit of Polygonum oriental L. ( Fam. Polygonaceae). The fruit spike is collected in autumn when the fruit is ripe, dried in the sun. The fruit is gathered, and removed from foreign matter.

Anti-tumor effect

10 consecutive days of administration of decoction, tincture or ligroine extract of shui honf hua zi to mice had inhibitory effect on Ehrlich ascites tumor and sarcoma 180 to a certain degree.

Bacteria-inhibiting effect

The inhibitory distance of 1:1 water decoction of shui hong hua zi over shigella dysenteriae and shigella flexneri were 16mm and 7mm respectively.

Diuretic effect

Within 6 hours, 10g/kg decoction of shui hong hua zi to rats could induce 6.14;0.65 mg/100g urinary volume while the control group had 4.54±0.62mg/100mg (P<0.05). Liquid extract also had obvious diuretic effect. And its mechanism may be related to the increase of plasma colloidal osmotic pressure and inhibition on the distal renal tubular reabsorption of water.

Hepatocirrhosis

shui hong hua zi, dan pi, tao ren, chao shan jia, chuan pi, 10g each; gou qi zi, dan shen, 15g each; ban bian lian, sha shen, 20g; sheng huang qi, nu zhen zi, mu li, 30g each. Modify the formula according to accompany symptoms. 1 dose every other day, 3 months as a course of treatment, 1~2 courses totally. There're 12 markedly effective cases, 15 effective cases and 3 ineffetive ones.

Hepatitis B

shui hong hua zi, ji nei jin, zhi da huang, da hei dou, hua jiao, lu fan, 30g each; shan dou gen, ren shen, 50g each; dong chong xia cao 150g; ban zhi lian, yin chen, mu li, 100g each. All drugs were grounded into fine granules, and made into pills along with 400 mashed boiled da zao, 9g per pill. 1 pill bid, 100 cases were treated, and 59 were cured, 40 effective, 1 ineffecitve. HBsAg negative conversion rate was 59%.

Liver cancer

Basic formula consisting of shui hong hua zi, shi jian chuan, san leng, e zhu and other herbs and modified according to accompanying symptoms was used to treat liver cancer along with acupoint-injection of anti-cancer injection (made from xiao ku cao, bai hua she she cao, ban zhi lian, dan shen, xue jian chou) on double Yang Ling Quan (GB34). 25 cases were treated, one-year survival rate was 60%, and three year survival rate was 16%.
