Cardiotonic effect

Extract of shui niu jiao (1g/ml) and 50% shui niu jiao decoction could increase the contractility of isolated heart with heart failure caused by low calcium of toads.

Lowering blood pressure

1~2ml's intravenous injection of 20% Shui Niu Jiao Injection could slightly increase the blood pressure of anaesthetized cats and rabbits followed by the lowering with a range of 2.67 kpa for 15~20 minutes.

Effects on EKG

Intravenous injection of shui niu jiao extract at the dosage of 2ml/kg could result in increased R-R distance, which was 0.29 second from the original 0.24 second.

Effects on the blood system

Intravenous injection of shui niu jiao extract at the dosage of 2ml/kg to rabbits could lower WBC count in one hour and the WBC count would restore after 5 hours. It could also increase platelet count, shorten coagulation time and increase the permeability of capillary vessels.

Effects on blood fat

Oral administration of shui niu jiao powder at the dosage of 0.5g/d for consecutive 8 days could lower the total serum cholesteral, and slightly increase HDLC.

Others

20% shui niu jiao decotion could excite the smooth muscle of intestines. It had anti-infectious effects.

Allergic purpura

shui niu jiao, sheng di huang, chi shao and dan pi was used to treat 54 cases of allergic purpura, 33 was markedly effective, 17 effective and 4 ineffective.

Schizophrenia

powder of shui niu jiao of 5~21g/d was administrated to patients with schizophrenia solely or together with other psychotolytic drugs, 1 month as a course of treatment. After 4 months, the total effective rate was 69.2%.

Acute rheumatic arthritis

7 cases of acute theumatic arthritis were treated with Shui Niu Jiao Tablet, 3 were basically cured, 4 were markedly effective and the total effective rate was 100%.

Hepatitis

Compound Shui Niu Jiao Tablet (composed of shui niu jiao powder, chai hu, fu ling, etc.) was used to treat 98 cases of chronic hepatitis B, 10 tablets, tid, 30 days as a course of treatment and 6 consecutive courses totally. The therapeutic effect was obvious compared with that of conventional western drugs (P<0.001).

Infantile summer Heat

shui niu jiao was used to treat 40 cases of infantile summer heat, 30 cases were effective. Usage: 6g for children under 1 year, 8g for children between 2~3 years, 10g for those over 3 years, tid.
