Lignum Sappan is the dried heart wood of Caesalpinia sappan L. (Fam. Leguminosae). The drug is collected mostly in autumn, removed from the white sap wood and dried.

su mu contains brazilin, sappanin and volatile oil whose main ingredients are a-1-phellandrene and ocimene.

Effects on cardiovascular system

Water decoction alcohol extract of su mu could increaset the blood flow volume in the coronary vessel of isolated rat hearts. It could increase the contractive of isolated frog hearts.

Influence over blood rheology

su mu could lower hematocrit and increase erythrocyte electrophoresis rate.

Effects on the CNS

Water decoction of su mu had hypnotic effect on mice, rabbits and guinea pigs. At large dosages, it had anaesthetizing effect and could result in death. It had certain excitatory effect on the respiration center in mice uncer cerebral ischemic and anoxic statee.

Anti-inflammatory effect

10% su mu decoction had inhibitory effect on staphylococcus aureus, typhoid bacillus, bacilius diphtheriae, bacillus paratyphosus and hemolytic streptococcus, etc..

Anti-cancer effect

Water extract (1g/ml) 2.5ml had obvious killing effect on HL-60, K562, L929 and Yacl in vitro, and this effect was believed to be dose-dependent.

100% water extract of su mu at the concentration of 2.5ml/ml had significant killing effect on HL-60, K562, L920 and yac-1. Intraperitoneal injection of 0.2ml to EAC tumor bearing mice daily for 7 consecutive days could prlong the survival time averagly by 185%, 0.15ml could prolong by 126.8%.

Intraperitoneal injection of su mu decoction had quite strong inhibitory and therapeutic effects on mice with leukaemia P388 and L1210, and obviously prolong the survival time of tumor-bearing mice.

Others

su mu had inhibitory effect on isolated uterus; it also had certain analgesic effect.

Hemorrhoids

Su Mu Jian: su mu, ku shen, mang xiao, 15g each; wu mei, hong hua, bai zhi, ru xiang, mo yao, huang lian, 10g each; 1 dose every day for steamed washing. Oral administration was accompanied. 374 cases were treated, 145 were markedly effective, 198 effective and 31 ineffective.

Angina pectoris due to coronary heart disease

su mu 12g, dan shen 12g, hong hua 12g, chi shao 12g, xiang fu 12g, yu jin 12g. For angina pectoris of qi stagnation and Blood stasis pattern, 1 dose daily.

Injury from trauma

su mu 12g, tao ren 12g, hong hua 12g, ru xiang 10g ,mo yao 10g, yan hu suo 10g. 1 dose daily.

Soft tissue injury

Tao Hong Xi Fang (experiential formula): tao ren, hong hua, su mu, ru xiang, mo yao, qiang huo, du huo, fang ji. The formula was used to treat 55 cases of soft tissure injury or injection, after 3~15 doses, all were effective.
