Semen Pruni Persicae is the dried ripe seed of Prunus persica (L.) Batsch or Prunus davidiana (Carr.) Franch. (Fam. Rosaceae). The fruit is collected when ripe. The seed is removed from sarcocarp and shell (endocarp), and dried in the sun.

The herb is used to treat hepatic fibrosis due to schistosomiasis, acute and chronic nephritis, infantile allergic purpura, epidemic hemorrhagic fever, and functional uterine bleeding, etc..

| Effects on various systems |
tao ren decoction could inhibit isolated frog heart and reduce heart rate. tao ren had anti-tussive effect through inhibiting respiratory center. tao ren could lower plasma and whole blood viscosity, increase erythrocyte deformation and inhibit platelet aggregation. It could also lower the adhesiveness of platelet, inhibit in vitro thrombosis. It had also anti-tussive and anti-inflammatory effects. |
tao ren could lower cholesterol, and lower the resistance of rat blood vessels. |
| Anti hepatic fibrosis effect |
The extract amygdalin contained in tao ren could increase blood flow amount in the liver, and increase the collagenase ability in the liver of rabbits with hepatic fibrosis due to schistosomiasis. It could promote the break down and metabolism of collagen in liver with fibrosis.

| Hepatic fibrosis due to schistosomiasis |
Kang Xian Ling I Formula (tao ren, zhe chong, zhi ke, mu tong, etc..), each tablet contains 3g crudedrug. 6 tablets, tid, 40 consecutive days. 32 out of 34 treated cases had improved symptoms and signs. |
| Acute nephtritis, chronic nephritis |
Experential formula for nephritis: tao ren, hong hua, chi shao, dang gui, 15g each; chuan xiong 10g, dan shen 15g. 1 dose every day, 15 days ~ 2.5 months as a course of treatment. 10 cases of acute nephritis and 40 cases of chronic nephritis were treated, and 35 were effective. |
| Infantile allergic purpura |
Supplemented Tao He Cheng Qi Tang: tao ren 15g, da huang 10g, gui zhi 15g, huang qin 10g, chai hu 15g, zi cao 15g, mang xiao 5g (taken with water). 1 dose every day, taken in three times. 1 ~2 weeks as a course of treatment. 87 cases were cured and 13 improved. |
| Epidemic hemorrhagic fever |
Tao Ren Cheng Qi Tang: tao ren 15g, da haung 20~30g (decocted later), mang xiao 30g (taken with water), chi shao 12g, dan pi 12g, zhi shi 12g, zhi zi 12g, che qian zi 30g, hua shi 30g, mu tong 9g. 1 dose every day, till 3 days after the body onload="highlight();" temperature was normal. Western medicine was also applied. 48 cases were treated, and the effect was better than the group treated with western medicine only. |

Experential formula: tao ren 12g; hong hua 6g; dan pi 15g; dan shen 20g; chi shao, bei xie, qu mai, ze xie, 15g each; bai jiang cao 25g; feng wei cao 30g. 1 dose every day. With Damp-Heat, add huang bo, mu tong; with distending pain in the lower abdomen, add wu yao, chuan lian zi and qing pi; with Kidney deficiency, add lu jiao pian, xian ling pi, tu si zi. 42 cases were treated, and 23 were cured (short-term), 4 ineffective. |
| Functional uterine bleeding |
Modified Tao Hong Si Wu Tang: tao ren 10g, hong hua 12g, dang gui 20g, chuan xiong 15g, bai shao 10g, sheng di 20g (decocted first), yi mu cao 30g. With deficiency of qi and Blood, add dang shen 20g, huang qi 5~20g; with deficiency of the Liver and Kidney, add chai hu, yu jin, wu ling zhi, dan pi, zhi zi, 10g each; with Heat in Blood, add huang qin 10g, huang lian 3g, je jiao zhu 10g, da haung 3g (grounded into powder and taken with water). 1~2 dose every day in the menstrual periods, taken in 2~4 times. 1 dose every other day after period. 3~6 months' treatment totally. 345 cases were treated, and 186 cured, 128 improved, 31 ineffective. |
| Chronic pulmonary abscess |
Experiential formula: tao ren 15g, xing ren 10g, yi yi ren 30g, yu xing cao 30g, jie geng 12g, dan pi 12g, bai mao gen 30g, jin yin hua 15g, lian qiao 15g, huang qin 10g, chuan bei mu 10g, gan cao 10g, 1 dose every day. With qi deficiency, add huang qi 15g, dang shen 15g, with haemoptysis, add sheng di 15g, san qi 6g; with dry mouth and throat, add sha shen 10g, mai dong 10g. With Phlegm, add sang bai pi 10g, ting li zi 10g. After 21 doses averagely (14~42 doses), all cases were effective. |
