The ED50 of trichodanthin was 1.78±0.28mg/kg when it was made into crude preparation and administrated subcutaneously to mice with 4~5 days' pregnancy. Subcutaneous injection of 0.2mg to mice with 10~12 days' pregnancy could stop pregnancy in over 75% mice. Human and different animals are sensitive to trichodanthin's pregnancy-stopping effect to different degrees, and the order was human > guinea pig > dog > rabbit > monkey > mice.

Trichodanthin had immunoenhancement and immunosuppressive effect as well. tian hua fen could promote the formation and differentiation of Spleen immune cells, increase the amount of IgM, B lymphocytes and IgG plasmocytes. Trichodanthin had inhibitory effect on humeral immunity, and could inhibit cellular immunity too.

Trichodanthin had certain effect on gestational trophoblastic tumor. 0.2ml intraperitoneal injection of tian hua fen could reduce the ascites in mice with ehrlich carcinoma, and lengthen the survival tim. Intraperitoneal injection at the dosage of 5mg/kg also had certain therapeutic effect on mice with experiemtnal liver cancer of ascites type.

Water extract of the root of Trichosanthes kirilowii had blood sugar lowering activity, it contained five polysaccharides Trichosan A, B, C, D and E. 7 hours after administration of above five polysaccharides, the blood sugar lowered obviously.

tian hua fen decoction had certain inhibitory effect on diplococcus pneumoniae, hemolytic streptococcus and bacilius diphtheriae in vitro.

in vitro tests showed that trichodanthin could inhibit the reproduction of HIV in infected cells and reduce the numbers of infected live cells in immune cells.

Yu Ye Tang was used to treat epidemic hemorrhagic fever in the stage of frequent urination: tian hua fen 30g, sheng shan yao, huang qi, 20g each; zhi mu, ge gen, wu wei zi, 15g each; sheng di, mai dong, 10g each. 1 dose every day, water decoction for twice to get 100ml juice. 30 cases were treated and 28 cured, 2 effective.

tian hua fen, chai hu and shan zha etc. were made into 8868 oral juice, 50ml, bid for three months. 61 cases of hepatitis B were treated, and the negative change rate of HbeAg was 55.3%, HbsAg was 13.1%, and anti-Heb was 21%.

Tong Jin San: tian hua fen, dang gui, xuan shen, 15g each; lai fu zi, 30g. The drugs were made into powder, 6g, tid, 10 days as a course of treatment. The method was used to treat 96 cases of habitual constipation, among 96 treated cases, 86 were cured, 7 effective and 3 ineffective.

tian hua fen, 9g, tid, for consecutive 3~7 days. The method could relieve symptoms of 6 patients with diabetes, and the glucose in urine disappeared or lowered.

61 cases of diabetes II were treated with tian hua fen 20g, li zhi he 15g, shi hu 10g, yu zhu 10g, shan yao 10g, bai shao 10g, bian dou 10g, lian zi rou 10g, fo shou 10g, mei gui hua 10g, dai dai hua 10g. 1 dose every day. 12 cases were clinically controlled, 6 markedly effective, 33 effective and 10 ineffective.

Intravenous drip of trichodanthin had good effect on chorioadenoma destruens, among 43 treated cases, 42 were cured and 1 dead. It also had certain effect on chorionepithelioma, but the effect on chorionepithelioma at stage IV was poor, so the total curative rate was 50.%
