Radix Achyranthes aspera is the root of Achyranthes aspera Linn. (Fam. Amaranthaceae). It's collected in summer and autumn, removed from stems and leaves and dried in the sun.

tu niu xi is indicated in the treatment of fever in common cold, tonsillitis, mumps, malaria, rheumatic arthritis, urinary stones and edema in nephritis, etc..

Miscellaneous effects

The decoction of tu niu xi showed anti-tumor effect on human in vivo. tu niu xi could neutralize bacilius diphtheriae toxin and prevent diphtheria.

Fever in common cold, infantile fever

tu niu xi (whole plant), gou gan cai, ci zhen cao, 30g. Water decoction, 1 dose daily.

Whooping cough

tu niu xi, e bu shi cao, ma lan, 30g, decocted with juice of rice wine. 1 dose daily, being takin in three times.

Diphtheria

tu niu xi 60g; ban lan gen, da qing ye 30g each were decocted into 200ml juice. 200ml for adults, 150ml or children between 7~8 years old, 100ml ofor 4~5 and 50 for infants.

Cancers

Asopharyngeal cancer: tu niu xi, ye mai, han fang ji, 30g.

Esophageal carcinoma: tu niu xi, dan shen, huang qi, sha shen, dang shen, 9g each; huang qin, chuan bei, ji nei jin, 6g each; jin yin hua 15g; bai ying 30g, for helf a year.
