Semen Vaccariae is the dried mature seed of Vaccaira segetalis (Neck.) Garcke (Fam. caryophyllaceae). It's collected in summer, dried and removed from foreign matter.

This herb is indicated in the treatment of hypogalactia, acute mastitis, urinary system stones, intercostal neuralgia, herpes zoster, and irregular menstruation, urinary disturbance, etc..

Mislaneous effects

Water decoction alcohol precipitation of wang bu liu xing could increase the erythrocyte deformability and erythrocyte electrophoresis, inhibit platelet aggregation and lower platelet adhesiveness in rabbits; but it could increase the whole blood viscosity under low shear. It could the respiration center of mice under anoxic and ischemic states. Water extract and aether extract had same anti-tumor activity when given through intraperitoneal injection. It had analgesic effect in experimental pain in mice. It could also terminate early pregnancy in mice.

Shingles

wang bu liu xing was fried to yellow with slow fire and grounded into fine powder, mixed with egg white which was applied to affected area, tid. 36 cases were treated, and 28 cases were cured within 3~5 days, the other was cured within 15 days.

Mastitis

wang bu liu xing 25g, pu gong ying 50g, 1 dose daily, water decoction, 28 cases of mastitis were treated and all cases were relieved after 3 doses.

Insufficient lactation

wang bu liu xing 9g, dang ui 10g, dang shen 10g, stewed with food (pig foot). The method could promote lactation.

Urinary stones

Er Zi Hua Liao Pai Shi Tang (experiential formula): ji xing zi, wang bu liu xing, chuan niu xi, zhi ke, sheng ji nei jin, shi wei, bian xu. Modify the formula according to TCM differentiation. 95 cases of urinary stones were treated and the effective rate was 88.4%.

Chronic prostatitis

wang bu liu xing 25g, chi shao 15g, yuan hu 15g, mu xiang 10g, gan cao 5~10g, huang bo 25g, bai jing cao 25g, pu gong ying 25g, dan pi 15g, chuan shan jia 15g, zao jiao cia 15g, etc.. 108 cases of chronic prostates were treated and 90% were effective.
