Scolopendra is the dried body onload="highlight();" of Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans L. Koch (Fam. Scolopendridae). It is collected in spring and summer, scalded to death in boiling water, dried in the sun.

This herb is indicated in the treatment of epilepsy, facial paralysis, hemiplegia, tetanus, hypertension, hepatitis, chronic nephritis, mumps, whooping cough, burn, psoriasis, and cancer, etc..

Anti-convulstion effect

Zhi Jing San (quan xie, wu gong) 1g daily for 1, 3, 9 days could antagonize the convulsion induced by carkiazol, strychnine and pure nicotine.

Anticancer effect

wu gong preparation had inhibitory effect on mice sarcoma180 and Ehrlich carcinoma, etc.. in vitro experiments showed that it could inhibit the respiration of liver cancer cells. wu gong extract had inhibitory effect on transplanted tumors in animals.

Antifungal effect

1:4 water infusion of wu gong had in vitro inhibitory effect on various dermatomyces.

Antituberculotic effect

Extract fluid of Jie He San in which wu gong was the main ingredient had inhibitory effect on tubercle bacillus.

Anti-inflammatory effect

Water extract of wu gong had an inhibitory rate of 86.5% on the ear inflammation induced croton oil in mice. It had obvious inhibitory effect on arthritis induced by agar in rats. It could inhibit the skin edema or increasing of vascular permeability in scald in rats.

Influence over immunological function

wu gong could increase the phagocytosis of intraperitoneal macrophages of mice, and activate Fc receptor in macrophages. wu gong at low dosages had the tendency of inhibiting the generation of antibody onload="highlight();" , while at high dosage, it could obviously inhibit the generation of antibody onload="highlight();" .

Others

wu gong had sedative and blood pressure lowering effect. It could significantly contract the smooth muscle of small intestine in rabbits.

Pulmonary TB

wu gong was baked over slow fire and grounded into powder for oral administration, 3 pieces, tid, for one month with an interval of 1 weeks. 12 cases of cavitary pulmonary tuberculosis which were treated with various antiphthisic drugs but ineffective were treated for at least 3 months. In 2 cases, the cavites closed, 6 shrinked and 4 cases showed no change.

Rheumatoid and rheumatic arthritis

Wu Gong Wine (wu gong, xi xin, 20g each; bai hua she 30g; dang gui, bai shao, gan cao, 60g soaked in 2000ml wine for 10 days), 30~40ml, bid. 25 days as a course of treatment with an interval of 5 days. 4 cases of rheumatoid arthritis and 7 cases of rheumatic arthritis were treated, and 8 were markedly effective, 3 improved.

Cancer

wu gong was made into injection or powder to treat 43 cases of stomach cancer, liver cancer, esophagus cancer, cervical cancer and breast cancer, 5 cases were cured, 8 markedly effective, 15 effective, and the total effective rate was 65.2%.

Impotence

Kang Wei Ling (wu gong 18g, dang gui 60g, bai shao 60g, gan cao 60g were grounded into fine powder, and divided into 40 sachets), half to one sachet each time, bid. 15 days as a course of treatment. 737 cases of impotence were treated, 655 cases were cured short-termedly (half year), 77 improved and 5 ineffective.

Whooping cough

Powder of wu gong (taken with water) 2g, bai jiang can 4g, di long 6g, e bu shi cao 6g, nan tian zhu zi 10g, tian jiang ke 10g. Modify the formula according to accompanied symptoms.

Facial paralysis

wu gong 2 pieces, fang feng 30g. wu gong powder was taken with fang feng decoction, 1 dose each night. 26 cases of facial paralysis were treated, 16 were cured, 6 markeldy effective, 3 improved and 1 ineffective.

Headache

Wu Xie Gou Ma Yin (wu gong 3 pieces, quan xie 6g, tian ma 10g, gou teng 30g) was used to treat refractory headache. The formula may be modified according to accompanied symptoms. 86 cases were treated, 46 markedly effective, 32 effective and 8 ineffective.

Stroke

She Xie Wu Gong San (bai hua she, wu gong, 1 piece each; quan xie 10g) was used to treat 47 cases of cerebral thrombosis of the first attack, and 24 were cured, 17 effective, 6 ineffective after 10~30 days' treatment.
