Radix Linderae is the root tuber of Lindera aggregate (Sims) Kosterm. (Fam. Lauraceae). The drug is collected all the year round, removed from rootlet, wahsed clean, either sliced while fresh and then dried in the sun or sun-dried directly.

wu yao contains volatile oil which includes lindenenol, lindenene, linderoxide, isolinderoxide, isofuranogermacrene, lindestrene, lindestrenolide, linderalactone, isolinderalactone, linderene and neolinderalactone, etc.. It also contains laurolitsine, linderol and linderic acid, etc..

Effects on the digestive system

Water decoction of wu yao at 1g/ml could significantly increase the amplitude of gastric electrogram in rabbits and increse the gastric contraction. Compound formula of wu yao could increase the movements of intestinal canal in anaesthetized dogs.

Anti-viral effect

wu yao had significant inhibitory effect on respiratory syncytial virus. It also had obvious inhibitory effect on CBV1, CBV3 and CBV4.

Effects on the cardiovascular system

The volatile oil of wu yao could excite the cardiac muscle, increase the blood pressure and promote blood circulation.

Anti-tumor effect

wu yao had an inhibitory rate of 44.8% on sarcoma S180 in mice.

Others

The volatile oil of wu yao could excite the cerebral cortex, promote respiration, relieve pain due to muscle spasm.

Adhesive ileus

Supplemented Wu Yao Tang (experiential formula): wu yao, sha ren, mu xiang, xiang fu, yuan hu, gan cao. 27 cases of adhesive were treated, 15 markedly effective, 11 improved and 2 ineffective.

Hyperplasia of prostate

wu yao, dang shen, shan yao, che qian zi, 15g each; huang qi 20g; jie geng 5g; fu ling, ze xie, dan pi, 10g each. 63 cases were treated, 28 markedly effective, 21 effective and 14 ineffective.

Primary dysmenorrhea

Tong Jing Ling: each 100 tablets containing yan hu suo 25g; xiao hui xiang, chao zhe chong, wu yao, 15g each and xi xin 10g. 5 tablets, tid. The treatment was applied 2 weeks before menstrual period, for 10 days, 3 course of treatment totally. 76 out of 80 treated cases were effective.

Bile reflux gastritis

dang shen 20g; ban xia, huang qin, chai hu, 15g each; huang lian, wu yao, zhu ru, 10g each; gan jiang 5g. Modify the formula according to TCM patterns. After 40 days' treatment, 30 out of 32 treated cases were effective.
