Flos Inulae is the dried capitulum of Inula japonica Thunb. or Inula britannica L. (Fam. Compositae). The drug is collected in the summer and autumn at flowering, removed from foreign matter, and dried in the shade or in the sun.

Anti-asthmatic and anti-tussive effects |
Flavones of xuan fu hua had significant protective effect on bronchial convulsive asthma induced by histamine in guinea pigs. It could also antagonize the spasm of isolated bronchia. Intraperitoneal injection of 15% xu fu hua decoction to mice had anti-tussive effect. |
Anti-bacterial effect |
1:1 xuan fu hua decoction had in vitro inhibitory effect on staphylococcus aureus, anthrax bacillus and shigella flexneri strain IIa. |
Others |
Chlorogenic acid had center excitatory effect on rats. It could increase the secretions of gastric acid, slow down the pulse, increase the intestinal peristalsis in rats and mice, and bile secretions in rats.

Pharynx neurosis (globus hystericus) |
xuan fu hua, xiang fu, zhi ke, 15g each; dai zhe shi, 20g; zhi ban xia, jie geng, 12g each; sheng jiang 10g; zhi gan cao 5g. Modify the formula according to accompanied symptoms. 1 dose daily. 500 cases of pharynx neurosis were treated for 3~27 doses, the totally effecive rate was 93%, and the recurrence rate was 12%. |
Ulcer |
xuan fu hua, hou po hua, zhi shi, gan cao, 15g each; chai hu, qing ban xia, huang lian, 12g each ;meng shi, e zhu, mo yao, zhi zi, 10g each; bai ji 30g; gua lou, xiang fu, 20g. Among 200 cases of ulcer, 73 were effective after 60 days' treatment. |
Meniere's syndrome |
dan shen, ze xie, 30g each; che qian zi 20g; bai zhu 5g; chuan xiong, ban xia, tian ma 10g each, with vomting, add dai zhe shi 12g, xuan fu hua 10g. 46 cases of Meniere's syndrome were treated for 7~30 days and all were effective. |
Alkaline reflux gastritis |
yan hu suo, 20g; dai zhe shi, sheng bai shao, 15g each; xuan fu hua, chai hu, 10g each; bai zhu, zhi shi, 12g each; ban xia 8g; huang lian 5g; zhi da huang 6g. Modify the formula according to TCM patterns. 45 out of 52 treated alkaline reflux gastritis were effective. |
