Herba Crotalariae is the whole plant of Crotalaria sessiliflora L. (Fam. Leguminosae). It's collected in summer and autumn.

ye bai he is indicated in the treatment of dysentery, carbuncles, scabies, infantile dyspepsia, psoriasis and cancers, etc..

ye bai he contains seven alkaloids including monocrotaline. It also contains flavones and amino acids.

Tumor inhibiting effect

Shows inhibitory effect on mouse S-180 sarcoma. Clinical trials shows effect against skin carcinoma, cervical cancer and rectal cancer. Monocrotaline is hydrolyzed by the Liver, its metabolite is strongly bound to RNA and inhibits DNA biosynthesis, resulting in a reduction of protein synthesis in the cancer cell.

Effects on the cardiovascular system

Intravenous injection of monocrotaline to dogs at the dosage of 2~6mg/kg to dogs could suddenly lower the blood pressure by 15~50% which would last 10~40 minutes. Monocrotaline had a short inhibitory effect on isolated rabbit heart.

Effects on the smooth muscle

At the concentration of 1-~20mg/ml, monocrotaline could increase the tension and amplitude of isolated ileum of rabbits and guinea pigs.

Malignant tumors

Intramuscular injection of 30% ethanol or 100% water extract of ye bai he, and oral administration of water decoction or tablets were used to treat 365 cases of malignant tumors of the digestive tract, lung, uterus, and the effective rates were 60.5% and 61.7% respectively.

Chronic bronchitis

Oral admnistration of water decoction of ye bai he was used to treat 111 cases of chronic bronchitis, the total effective rate was 73.8%.

Psoriasis

Oral administration of water decoction of 30~45g ye bai he accompanied, and the dregs were used for external washing of affected areas, once daily, 10 days as a course of treatment, 3~4 courses totally. The method was used to treat 38 cases of psoriasis, and the total effective rate was 97.3%.

Infantile hydrocele

Oral administration of 25g ye bai he, once daily, 7 days as a course of treatment, 2~7 courses totally. 39 cases of infantile hydrocele were treated and all were cured.
