Herba Lycopi is the dried aerial part of Lycopus lucidus Turcz. var. hirtus Regel (Fam. Labiatae). The drug is collected between summer and autumn when the stems and the leaves are growing luxuriantly, and dried in the sun.

ze lan is indicated in the tratment of soft tissue infections, diabetes, hemorrhoids and chronic pelvic inflammation, etc..

ze lan contains volatile, glucoside, rutin, resin, saponins, hydroxybenzenes and flavonoid glycosides, etc..

Miscellaneous effects

Water decoction alcohol precipitation of ze lan could improve erythrocyte deformability, increase erythrocyte electrophoresis rate, lower platelet adhesiveness, lower fibrinogen. Preparations of whole plant of ze lan had cardiotonic effect. ze lan could slightly inhibit coagulation system and increase fibrinolysis activity.

Soft tissue infections

Xiao Yu Gao (ze lan, hong hua, tao ren, xue jie, pu xiao) was applied to the affected areas of soft tissue infections, change the dressing daily or every other day. Local symptoms of 79 out of 80 treated cases were improved within 3 days.

Diabetes

57 cases of type II diabetes were treated with ze lan, chuan xiong, chi shao, di gu pi, 15g each; dan shen 30g; shui zhi, 10g, gui jian yu, tian hua fen, sheng di, huang qi, 20g each; water decoction, 1 dose daily for 3 months. 30 cases were markedly effective, 19 improved and 8 ineffective.

Hemorrhoids

Huo Yu Huang Lan Tang: da huang, ze lan, chi shao, yu xing cao. Water decoction for external steaming and washing. Shuang Bo Gao was also used for external application: da huang, ze lan, ce bai ye, huang bo, bo he, bing pian, etc.. 53 out of 54 treated cases of hemorrhoids were effective.

Chronic pelvic inflammation

Zha Po Chong Tao Dan (experiential formula): sheng di, dan shen, dan pi, ze lan, hu po, chong wei zi, shan zha, fu ling, tao ren.
