Radix Asteris Tatarici is the dried root and rhizome of Aster tataricus L. f. (Fam. Compositae). The drug is collected in spring and autumn, removed from the knotty rhizomes and soil, braided anci dried in the sun, or dried in the sun directly.

Expectorant effect

Gastrogavage of zi wan decoction at the dosage of 1g/kg to anaeshtesized rabbits had significant expectorant effect which could last for more than 4 hours. Oral administration of its crude extract could significantly increase the bronchial secretions in rats.

Effect on cough

Gastrogavage of zi wan decoction to mice had significant effect on cough induced by ammonia spray. Gastrogavage of water deocction of zi wan at the dosage of 10g/kg to mice had anti-tussive effect on cough induced by SO2 stimulation.

Effects on bacteria

in vitro tests showed that zi wan had inhibitory effect on bacillus coli, shigella dysenteriae, typhoid bacillus, bacillus paratyphosus and staphylococcus aureus, etc.. Water decoction of zi wan also had inhibitory effect on influenza virus.

Effects on tumors

Epifriedelanol contained in zi wan had inhibitory effect on EAC in mice. Cyclopeptides showed anti-tumor activity on sarcoma S180 in mice.

Infanitle pneumonia

zi wan, bai bu, jie geng, bai qian, 9g each; chen pi, gan cao 3g, geach; jing jie 4.5g. Modify the formula according to accompanied symptoms, 1 dose daily for consecutive 3 days. 30 cases of infantile pneumonia were treated, and western medicine was also applied. The average cure time was 5.57±0.32 days, while those treated with western medicine only were cured after 7.23±0.49 days (P<0.01).

Whooping cough

Whooping cough (experiential formula): bai bu, zi wan, 9g each; bai fu zi, bai jiang can, chuan xiong, ru xiang, 5g each; dan nan xing 3g; dai zhe shi 10g. Water decoction, 1 dose daily. 50 cases of infantile whooping cough wre treated. After 3 doses for the initial stage and 6 doses for the middle stage, the cough could be stopped.

Chronic bronchitis

Modified Zi Wan Tang (sheng shi gao, zi wan, zhi sang pi, zhi dong hua, jie geng, xing ren, qian hu, zhi gan cao), 1 dose daily, water decoction, 3~15 doses toally. 19 cases were markedly effective, 14 effective and 3 ineffective.

Hemoptysis

Zi Wang Tang: zi wan 15g; zhi mu, chuan bei, jie geng, ren shen, 10g each; fu ling, e jiao; 12g each; gan cao, wu wei zi, 6g each. 1 dose daily. Modify the formula according to accompanied symptoms. 46 cases of hemoptysis were treated,10 were cured, 12 markedly effective, 11 effective and 13 ineffective.

Asthma

zhi ma huang 7g; di long 18g; xing ren, su zi, tao ren, zhi shi, zi wan, 10g each. 118 cases of asthma were treated and 99 were effective.
