CANG ZHU & HOU PO

Prescription: chao cang zhu 90g; zhi da huang, zhi cao wu, chao xing ren, chuang qiang hua, 30g each. All drugs were grinded into fine powder. Methods: 1.5g, bid. 96 cases of bacillary dysentery were treated with this formula, 56 cases were cured after 2~4 days’ treatment, 6 cases were cured after 6~8 days’ treatment, 28 cases were improved, 6 were ineffecitve.

cang zhu was grinded into powder, and when used, the powder was made into thin paste with white sesame oil. Apply the paste to the burned or scalded area, once or twice every day until recovery. For mild cases, it took 3~4 days to slough and 7~10 days to heal up. For severe cases, the course of treatment will be a little longer.

jiao cang zhu, sha ren, 200g each, and chao che qian zi 100g were grinded into fine powder. This powder was used to treat more than 200 cases of simple infantile dyspepsia which may be accompanied with low-grade dehydration. Methods: 1.5~2g for patients younger than 6 months, 2~3g for those between 1~3 years; three times every day. All cases were cured within 7 days. 

7 cases of eczema with erosion as the main symptoms were treated with the following method: cang zhu, huang qin and huang bo, 15g each plus 1500ml water were decocted to 600~700m, then filter the decoction. The liquor was used to wash the affected part, 20 minutes’ washing, once every day, while for severe cases, twice every day. 7 cases were cured after 1~2 weeks.

3 g cang zhu powder was taken with water in three times to treat 42 cases of xerosis conjunctivae. The symptoms disappeared after 2~3 days’ treatment.

7 cases of chronic ulceratiue stomatitis was treated with dense decoction of 15g cang zhu, 9g wu bei zi and 3g gan cao. 1 dose every day, being taken in three times. All cases were cured after 3~9 doses. Only one case had a relapse during one year’s follow-up survey, but the case were cured again by the same formula.

45 cases of psoriasis were treated with Tong Dao San. Basic formula: hou po 10g, zhi ke 12g, sheng da huang 9g, mang xiao 9g, chen pi 10g, mu tong 9g, hong hua 10g, su mu 15g, gan cao 10g. Variations: with loose stool due to Spleen deficiency, remove da huang and mang xiao, add chao shan yao, bai zhu, fu ling; with Dampness-Heat, add tu fu ling, huang lian, huang bo, zhi zi; with severe Blood stasis, add sang leng, e zhu, shui zhi; with qi deficiency, add ren shen, huang qi, etc.. Results: 44 were effective, the average treating time was 75 days.

46 cases of chronic pharyngitis were treated with experiential formula Li Yan Tang. Basic formula: hou po, she gan, gua lou pi, zhe bei, lian qiao, zhi ke, niu bang zi, sha shen, 10g each; shan dou gen, 12g; jie geng, chan tui, gan cao, 6g each. Variations: with burning pain and feverish sensation in the throat, add xuan shen, jin yin hua, 12g each; with bitter taste and yellow tongue fur, add huang qin 12g; with pressing feeling in the throat, add ma bo 10g; with nausea, add zhu ru 6g; with dry throat and thirst, add tian hua fen, shi hu, 15g each; with Fire due to yin deficiency, add huang bo, zhi mu, 12g each; with proliferated follicles in the posterior pharyngeal wall, add yu yin, he huan pi, 10g each. 1 dose every day, 10 days as a course of treatment, 2~3 courses were necessary. Results: 24 cases were markedly effective, 19 improved, 3 ineffective.

88 cases of ascites due to cirrhosis were treated with the following formula: chuan po, zhi shi, qing pi, chen pi, chen pi, da fu pi, bing lang 9g each; ba yue zha, zhu ling, fu ling, ze xie, 15g each; fu shui cao, yu li ren, chen qian zi, hu lu, 30g each. Variations: with jaundice, add yin chen, zhi zi, da huang, with increased GPT, add pu gong ying, tian ji huang, chui pen cao; with hydrothorax, add ting li zi, chen xiang; with qi deficiency and qi stagnation, add tai zi shen and bai zhu; with Blood deficiency and qi stagnation, add fu zi and gan jiang; with Blood stasis and qi stagnation, add dan shen, ze lan, shui hong hua zi, ma bian cao. 1 dose every day, no salt in diets during the treatment. Results: 51 cases were markedly effective, 29 improved, 8 ineffective. The course of treatment ranged from 7 days to 3 months.
